Out of Context #0002
Me: Nothing is quite so fun as beating a hooker with a bat.
Me: There’s something satisfying about it.

Pandora
Check out the Pandora if you haven’t seen it already. It’s a Linux based open source device that appears to be a combination of a Nintendo DS and a palm computer. They describe it as an “ultra portable open source computer with gaming controls”.
Seems very cool to me. The emulation possibilities for this are very, very good.

Fallout 3: First Impressions
I can only think of one word to describe the feeling that I had this evening while giving Fallout 3 a test run. That word is, “Wow.” I don’t even know where to begin. This game is that fucking good.
The graphics, the music, the voice acting, the presentation, the story, and the atmosphere. Even the physics. It’s all there. This could very well be the first “perfect” PC game. I started playing at 8:00 and the next time I looked at the clock was 10:15. Two hours just melted away.
I’m going to let Mr. Maroon, who is a far bigger Fallout fan (and therefore a far more qualified reviewer) do the honor of giving this game a full review. However, I will say one thing about the game: the Wastelands alone make it worth buying. I was absolutely stunned by the absolute depth of it all. I will certainly post more thoughts on it later.

Far Cry 2: First Impressions
I’m trying. I really am. But there’s just something about Far Cry 2 that doesn’t sit well with me. I can’t put my finger on what it is, exactly. It looks great, the physics are everything that I’ve come to expect from a Crytek game, and there is far more to the plot than the original Far Cry. (Who am I kidding? Far Cry barely had any plot development at all.)
I think my biggest problem with this game is the fact that Crytek couldn’t decide whether they wanted to build a shooter or an action RPG. In my opinion, they should have either given the RPG side of the game a bit more depth or just kept it out altogether. I’m also not a big fan of the day/night cycle and the AI can be an absolute pain in the ass.
I’m going to play a bit further before making a final call on this one. Maybe things will turn around. I’m only a few hours into what I’ve been told is a 25 hour single player campaign. One thing that I can’t seem to shake from my mind, however, is that this is nothing like the original game. I can’t find a damn thing that ties the two together, which leaves me wondering one thing: why did they call it Far Cry?
Borderlands: Guns. Lots of Guns.
It looks like Gearbox Software has some rather ambitious plans for its upcoming PC, PS3, and 360 release known as Borderlands. The game, which is a science fiction first person shooter with some role playing elements mixed in, uses a randomized system to generate item drops – including guns, armor, and items. It sounds to me like something between the miserable failure that was Hellgate: London and Diablo.
Gearbox has a bit of a hit and miss record, so I’m trying hard not to pee myself in excitement. However, if done well, this could be a damn good game. Think about it: heat seeking rocket launchers, sniper pistols, and shotguns that fire explosives. Or how about just giving me a revolver that fires grenades? The possibilities are endless for this type of game. Not to mention the fact that there are vehicles.
Personally, I’m wondering how the multiplayer is going to work.

Woot Shirts (and More!)
Many of you may have heard of woot.com, the popular daily deals site for tech toys. What many of you may not have heard of is shirt.woot.com, one of their “side project” sites. I’ve purchased a few shirts through their site and received a few others as gifts. They’re high quality, always feature unique designs or funny cartoons, and I must say that they are extremely comfortable.
Check them out when you get a chance.
UPDATE – I should also point out that tshirthell.com, threadless.com, and roadkilltshirts.com are all sites from which awesomeness can also be had.
