Nmap
Nmap is an open source tool designed for network exploration and security auditing. If you’ve ever had even a passing interest in networking, computer security, or how the Internet works, then you should check out this program. I’ve been using it at work a lot recently to do penetration testing. I must warn you, however, that you can get into deep shit if you use this for evil.
You can visit the Nmap website here. As an added bonus, they have links to more than a hundred other great network monitoring tools, white hat hacking utilities, and more! I got more than a dozen useful apps there today.

Boom Blox Sequel Coming Soon!
1up and several other media outlets are reporting that Steven Spielberg and EA are back in the studio working on a follow-up to the awesome Nintendo Wii game Boom Blox. It’s set for release this spring! I got the first one this past summer and we played the hell out of it. It’s a great family or group game. I’m really looking forward to a sequel.

Measurement Lab
Curious about whether you’re getting screwed out of bandwidth by your ISP? You should check out the New America Foundation’s new suite of tools, dubbed Measurement Lab, or M-Lab for short. They’re designed to give you the raw details on your connection speed, limits, etc. I’m testing my own connection this evening.
As a sidenote, these NAF guys are supported by Google. The search giant actually approached them and asked them to develop these tools in the first place. Very cool of Google to support such a project.
