According to this post on NPR, GM gives about 8,000 of their workers free cars every six months and those cars get free gas. This is the same company that has just received $13 Billion in taxpayer loans to avoid bankruptcy and is asking for another $16 Billion more.
Ex-GM Employee Rob Kleinbaum states:
“It’s a really highly valued perk,” Kleinbaum says of the program. “It’s feels kind of fun. You get to drive a new car every three months. You never have to pay for it. Gasoline is always free.”
NPR continues quoting him here:
Kleinbaum says continuing to provide cars and gas sends the wrong message.
“This is much like when the CEOs flew their airplanes to Washington, begging for money,” he says. “It’s not as insulting as that.”
I don’t see that big of a problem for GM employees to have certain perks, but I think much like Kleinbaum. When you are begging the tax payers of the United States for money, you need to cut redundant costs so that the money isn’t going to non-necessity items.
