Wired is running an insane article about a new piece of 3D scanning software called ProFORMA, or Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition. It allows the user to turn a cheap webcam into a powerful three dimensional object scanning device. Combined with a three dimensional printer, the possibilities are pretty much endless. You really have to see it to believe it.

From a 3d modeller’s point of view it seems a little messy even though its dealing with very basic shapes. The real test will be seeing how it handles organic shapes.
Having said that, if there was a way to record the tracking information in relative 3d it would open up motion capture to the average 3d user, which, at the VERY least, will mean some awesome mods for games and some nifty 3d vids.
If they make it work well, make it cheap/free and easily available I’m sure we’ll see some mind blowing applications of the software within a few years. Imagine combining it with something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ-VjUKAsao&feature=player_embedded
(she waffles a bit but the idea is cool so bare with her)
