I caught this story the other night about a four year old boy in Texas named Taylor Pugh who is currently serving an in-school suspension because his school’s administrators say that his long hair violates their dress code. The Associated Press has a video segment on the story.
I’ve always thought that dress codes were a fucking ridiculous idea… but telling someone that they can’t wear their hair a certain way? Does this seem like a rights violation to anyone else? Even if it’s a private school, it doesn’t seem like this is something that administrators should legally be able to enforce.
Agree? Disagree? Have at it in the comments.

I dunno about the kid, but that woman talking on behalf of the school looks like that photoshop of Nicolas Cage with a bird on his head.
Also, face-palm at the father who akins cutting his sons hair to holding him down against his will. ITS CALLED FUCKING PARENTING YOU COCK!!!
Argh, no wonder kids are growing up the way they are with arsehole parents like these!
Two thoughts: 1. the District rep should take some styling tips from the 4 year old. 2. isn’t this sexism? I’m sure the girls are allowed hair longer than this kid’s.
Sadly, it’s a private school, so they can do whatever they want. The kid’s parents are choosing to go there, so they have to follow the rules of the school.
Public school would be another story though.
*grabs broom* rabble rabble rabble rabble!!
Shinanigans, total BS I call so just boys’ hair can’t be long because it’s a distraction what about girls with long hair…
retarded conservative mentality.
just another example of how the so called “conservative values” keep creeping into your rights to your own body! I mean really one day when you wake up and your body doesn’t belong to you then you will see how so call good christian values are ruining everything it touches!
Hmm, the issue is more complicated than it seems. Although the father is right to not want to cut his son’s hair short just because it is a social norm, the way he describes hair cutting is pretty goofy. The district official is really wacko. Admitting that the policy is conservative and then saying they need to follow the policy anyway? To people saying the school is private, you’re incorrect. If a school district official is citing these regulations, then it is a public school; private schools are not subject to the school district they fall in.
The only one with sense in this case is the 4 year old boy who doesn’t want to cut his hair because he likes the way it is.
The social norm is bunk. I think for people who want what robot society teaches is good then follow the rules and you will stay in line and get all the treasures sad old people in society say are good. The school system seems to restrict cultural expansion and only thinks of themselves. They want to restrict hair length to make their job easier? Is it just me or does that sound like people who dont like their job… Teaching kids at that age is like raising kids at that age. Here you have parents who give their child freedom being restricted by “parents” who dont want to give their children full freedom. Which one is right? The parents are. They are the authority here when it comes to the child. If they would rather he be happy then why shouldnt he have that? The school would rather see him do better in school. The problem is the system doesnt work. If your system worked, you wouldnt need to restrict his hair length… He would want to learn anyway. So instead of looking at themselves as the problem they look at the child as the problem. They would rather not grow in their jobs and learn how to do them better. They want to do it the way they were taught. They are robots. I think we need more hippies teaching kids.
Cut your hair, or goto a public school, wow, issue solved.
its the Hair New world Order.
Conspiracy!
Sadly I think that greg and Riiz are right, this situation is pretty black and white. I have no idea whats what as far as the private school not being subject to district doctrine argument goes. I’m not from Texas so I don’t know what their laws are. It’s also possible that the news just goofed on what that ridiculous woman’s title actually is. That being said, since this is a private school and no one is making the parents put their child in that school, they have little room to argue. Basically, if they don’t like it, they can giiiiiiiit out! And send the kid to public school.
I’m not even gonna begin to comment on how wrong it is to force a four year old to choose between his friends and his personal appearance, or what this little squabble is going to do to the child’s trust in schools, authority, etc.
Does anyone else see that this little boy is going to grow up a big woman?
Running a school is like being a parent, when you give the kids bullshit rules, they learn you’re full of bullshit. How do I know the hair-length rule is bullshit? They suspend the kid for it. They are more interested in enforcing their rules than educating the kid.
I agree with beta. You know your no longer free when you cant even wear your hair long. Fascists tend to want more control. Turn the world into versions of themselves and suck everything into their own tortured way of being. God forbid someone finds themselves momentarily in a phase of long hair and friends. They chock it up to education. Sounds like an excuse to me. What he cant read the page with all that hair in his face? Or maybe you think hes part of the hippy culture that you feel should be eradicated and shot like a dog who foams at the mouth. Hes like 6 years old. Barely old enough to know where babies come from and your worried his hair will stop your abilities to educate him in their tracks. I don’t think someone is up to facing the newness reality refreshes itself in. These schools are more interested in building an army than educating growing people. You dont educate someone by telling them how to be. You educate them by helping them understand things. The better understanding the more clear the choice is. If the choice is clear then the child gets to choose a path. If his choice is to have long hair or short it makes no difference in your life. the path these people seem to choose is one of resistance rather than release. This is the opposite of going with the flow. This is putting up a dam in order to control who makes it and who doesn’t. Why someone would choose this path is confusing but obvious. Its confusing because its far from my perception. Its obvious because you need just put yourself in that place to see what would compel you to behave that way. These are people who project themselves onto others. They expect conformity so that others will think of them well. Trying to fit into the eyes of society and quietly staying depressed and unhappy with themselves. So someone who is the opposite to this actually looks like a problem rather than an answer. If you are aware at all you would agree that answers in life seem to be right in front of you but always exist in a place you would never expect. These people are sad pill poppers who enjoy long walks and the beach, beating their kids, and crying themselves to sleep. I would say leave the education to the professionals but who would that be? Im sure there are schools out there with honest to god level headed thinking but this sick society is so deluded that it doesnt know where to turn to for help. Everywhere we look we see people who are the problem. Look within. You are your worst enemy. I wish more people took that leap and would see real truth rather than staying asleep.
The AP article has a link to the school district web site. At the bottom of the page is a contact link that will lead to an email form. Let them know what you think
