GSM Encryption Broken?

Karsten Nohl, a German software developer and encryption expert, made a bold claim in front of a large audience at the Chaos Communication Congress earlier this week. Nohl claims that he and a team of contributors have broken the primary encryption code protecting GSM phone calls.

That’s right – 80% of phone calls across the globe are now vulnerable to eavesdropping. Of course, spokespeople from the GSM Association are trying to downplay this breakthrough, saying that listening in on someone’s call is still “technically complex”. However, that doesn’t discount the fact that their encryption is now broken.

Looks like it might finally be time to switch to that 3G model you’ve been drooling over!
