Forgotten Retro Classics: Little Nemo (NES)
As I mentioned yesterday, I plan to introduce several new series features here on What The Christ? over the next few weeks. One series that I’m particularly excited about is Forgotten Retro Classics. Posts in this series will highlight some of the best old school video games that have either been forgotten or simply didn’t receive the attention they deserved in the first place.
I’m going to start with a frequently overlooked platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System that’s near and dear to my heart. It’s called Little Nemo: The Dream Master.
Little Nemo is a platformer originally released on the NES by Capcom in 1990. The game is based on a Japanese film adaptation of the Little Nemo In Slumberland comic strip drawn by Winsor McCay. The strip was published in the New York Herald and the New York American newspapers from 1905 to 1914. The film adaptation was produced in 1989 but did not see a US release until 1992. Although the movie was a box office flop, it was a hugely successful VHS in 1993 with more than two million copies sold. A DVD version was released in 2002 and again in 2008.
The story revolves around a boy named Nemo, who dreams of a journey to a world called Slumberland where the evil Nightmare king is holding Morpheus, the king of Slumberland, hostage. You take on the role of Nemo in the game. The object is to locate keys scattered across each sprawling level as you search for Morpheus. Along the way, Nemo encounters a range of animals, most of which he can ride. Each animal possesses its own strengths and weaknesses. The game is regarded as one of the most challenging platformers on the NES. (I’ve never beaten it, myself.)
Aside from the fantastic plot, Little Nemo: The Dream Master also has one of the best musical scores of any NES game. The music was produced by Junko Tamiya. Tamiya worked as a composer at Capcom from 1987 to 1992, producing music for The Battle of Midway, Bionic Commando, Strider, and Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight.
You can actually play Little Nemo online at Nintendo8. Click here!

The Assault Breacher
The Assault Breacher is based on an M1A1 Abrams tank. It weighs 70 tons, can reach a top speed of 45MPH, and it carries a .50 caliber mounted machine gun for short range defense. The purpose? Destroy IEDs – a job that this monster does exceptionally well. It’s just recently been deployed to the battlefield in Afghanistan under the control of the USMC.

Hercules MK4
Interested in learning to DJ your own parties and events? Don’t want to spend an absolute fortune on professional grade gear until you’ve had some practice? Hercules to the rescue! They just announced the release date and pricing for their MK4 DJ controller this past week at Musikmesse, a European music trade fair that takes over there on an annual basis.
The device, which includes an integrated audio source, will be available in June for a mere $199.99. That’s a far cry from, say, my Numark NS-7, which ran me a bit over $1,200. The only other gear you’d need to run your own show is a pair of good PA speakers and some decent headphones – plus a computer, of course.
If you’re interested in reading more, check out the product page. Hercules makes solid gear. I’ve played around with their controllers before. They’re not a top grade equipment manufacturer but they’re far from junk.

IOCELL NetDisk
I just bought an IOCELL NetDisk for $59.99 with a 1.5TB Seagate SATA hard drive for an additional $97.99 the other day. Why? Because in conjunction with an Xbox 360 it’s a damn good alternative to an expensive media server solution.
The NetDisk is a rather simple device. It’s just an external hard drive enclosure that happens to have a built-in Ethernet port, enabling you access the installed drive as a standard network storage device. The drive comes with software that must be installed on any computer(s) you want to be able to access the drive. The software also has a very nice read/write protection feature for shared environments.
I’m using Vuze to connect media on my drive to my 360. I can stream it to my big screen – or to other machines on my network – from there.
If you’re interested in snagging one of these, they’re sold at Fry’s and a few other big retailers. You can check out the product page on the IOCELL website right here.

Metroid: Other M Gameplay Trailer
I wasn’t sure what to think when Nintendo announced that another Metroid game was in the works. However, this gameplay trailer has completely changed my opinion. I’m now quite thoroughly stoked.

2011 Hennessey Venom GT
Anyone who knows me knows that I have a weakness for the Lotus Elise. It is, has been, and probably always will be my absolute favorite vehicle on the planet.
That’s why I almost came in my pants out of my chair when I saw that Hennessey is rolling out exactly ten Venom GT versions of Lotus’ flagship sports car. Running on a 725 horsepower Corvette ZR1 engine with options to upgrade to 1,000 or 1,200 horses, this is going to be without a doubt one of the fastest street legal vehicles in the world.
