VAC Mistakenly Bans 12,000 Modern Warfare 2 Players, Valve Fixes it with Free Copies of L4D2
Valve’s anti-cheating software VAC malfunctioned over the weekend, resulting in the accidental banning of more than 12,000 Modern Warfare 2 players. Instead of simply apologizing, however, company president Gabe Newell did perhaps the coolest thing a video game company president has ever done: he apologized and gave everyone impacted two free copies of Left 4 Dead 2 – one to keep and one to give to a friend.
Here’s the full text of the email that he sent out.
Hello,
Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.
The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn’t a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).
We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn’t already own the game.
To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can ‘Manage Gifts and Guest Passes’ from the ‘Games’ Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656.
To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn’t already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately.
Regards,
Gabe Newell
President, Valve
Newell is a freakin’ saint, if you ask me.

Wikileaks Publishes 77,000 Reports, Some with “Secret” Classification, from the War in Afghanistan
Unless you’ve been living under a rock today you’ve probably heard that Wikileaks published 77,000 reports on the war in Afghanistan dated from 2004 through the end of 2009. Founder Julian Assange, who says that his group has another 14,000 documents that they’ve yet to release due to security concerns, gave an interview with Spiegel that somewhat explains his decision to release the collection. Spiegel is one of three media outlets that were given embargoed copies of the complete database more than a month ago. The other two media outlets were The Guardian, which has taken the time to create an interactive map using data from the reports, and The New York Times. CBC did a great job summarizing the efforts of all three publications.
Many of the documents are classified as “secret”. Many of the documents are damaging to the United States’ political standing in the Middle East. The White House came out in strong opposition to the leak, calling it a threat to the security of military personnel overseas.
Some of the documents are infuriating and confusing – such as a report that Osama Bin Laden actually died in a hospital in Pakistan back in 2007.

Video of Whale vs. Boat
Remember the Whale vs. Boat story that we posted a few days ago? Someone apparently captured video of the incident. It clearly shows the animal coming down on the ship like a ton of bricks. (You can also hear a couple of assholes laughing in the background.)

Finger Food
A visitor named Jason sent me a link to this a while back. He thought it was hilarious – and I have to agree. This would be awesome to have at a barbecue.

The Blackest Hearts: War Crimes In Iraq
The Guardian published a horrifying (and perhaps thankfully) edited excerpt from journalist Jim Frederick’s upcoming book Black Hearts: One Platoon’s Descent Into Madness In Iraq’s Triangle Of Death yesterday.
The article details a 2006 incident in which four sadistic U.S. soldiers took part in the murder of an entire Iraqi civilian family – including their 14 year old daughter, Abeer Muhammad, who was raped, shot in the head, and then set on fire.
The book, which details the lives (and more importantly the crimes) of soldiers serving in 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, comes out on August 6.
Warning: The content of this article is vile, disgusting, and depressing. If you’re having a particularly good day, you may want to save this for future reading.

Monsters
This was revealed at Comic Con. It’s considered a “low budget” project. Reminds me of something caught between Jurassic Park and District 9.

Street Fighter IV vs. Tekken Mash-ups Announced
In perhaps the most interesting move in fighting game history, Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono and Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada announced at Ono’s “Street Fighter IV and Beyond” Comic Con panel that both Capcom and Namco are working on Street Fighter x Tekken and Tekken x Street Fighter. Capcom’s game will feature Tekken characters but plays like a Street Fighter game. Namco’s game, on the other hand, will feature Street Fighter characters but will play like a Tekken game.
Both games are coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, no release dates have been announced as of this posting. Ono did, however, have a playable demo of the Capcom version of the game with him at the show.
