Call Phones from GMail
You can now call telephones directly from GMail. All you need is a microphone.
Calls to the United States and Canada will be free “at least for the rest of the year” but international calls will incur a fee. Regardless, this is rather cool on Google’s part. Sadly, I think it’s just a precursor to something sinister considering the recent partnership between the “do no evil” search giant and Verizon.
Drunken Man Shoots Computer Server
Given the things that I’ve been dealing with over the past few days, I have to admit that I can identify with Joshua Lee Campbell, a 23 year old (former) employee at a mortgage company in Utah who was arrested for firing a .45 caliber handgun into a server worth at least $100,000 at the offices of his employer, RANLife Home Loans.
Campbell, who was drunk at the time of the shooting, called police and reported his weapon stolen after blasting the server himself. Fortunately, this happened late at night, so none of his coworkers were around.
Portal 2: Wheatley

Trapped Chilean Miners Told Not to Become “Too Fat”
You may have heard that a group of 33 Chilean miners became trapped in the San Esteban gold and copper mine in Copiapo, north of Santiago, when the mine’s exit tunnel collapsed back on August 5th. Somehow, all 33 of the men managed to survive the collapse but they’re now trapped in an underground shelter.
What you may notĀ have heard is that it’s going to take rescuers as long as four months to dig them out. Authorities aren’t sharing that information with the trapped miners at this point over fears that the news will cause them to panic. However, authorities are telling them not to get “too fat” because they won’t fit through the narrow escape tunnel they’re digging.
Yeah, because there’s a fucking McDonald’s down there, right?

Serious Lag Issues
UPDATE: The 404 issues that many of you reported have been resolved.
It’s been a rough couple of days on the administrative side of What The Christ? We had a huge issue with our database server that has been causing some rather serious lag issues, as I’m sure most of you have noticed. It took three people working around the clock for the past two days and nights to clean up the mess.
The good news, however, is that I think we have things squared away, now. We’re keeping a close eye on the server logs and CPU usage – and we plan to continue doing that over the next few days – but it looks like we’re out of the woods at this point.
I apologize for the slow updates over the past three or four days. I was busy trying to keep Mr. Blue from taking a bat to his monitor and we were both going blind staring at screens in the MySQL database. On the bright side, I did a lot of much needed cleanup and learned a thing or do about flushing queries properly. (Protip: Fuck that up and you make your lag problem a lot worse. I managed to crash the entire server about a dozen times.)
