FBI, CIA Trying to Wiretap the Internet

The New York Times is running a piece that shines a spotlight on new legislation from the FBI and CIA aimed at enabling federal law enforcement and national security agencies to listen in on encrypted online communications. They’re basically asking Congress to enact a law that would force companies that facilitate private online discussions – Facebook, BlackBerry, and Skype included – to modify their platforms in such a way that they would be able to comply in the event of a wiretap subpoena from federal authorities.

If this isn’t a violation of the basic rights of a United States citizen, then I don’t know what is. One can only hope that Congress has a shred of sanity left when considering the repercussions of allowing a proposal as dangerous as this to become law.

Minecraft Purchased 25,936 Times Last Wednesday

Markus “Notch” Persson must be the happiest indie game developer on the planet this week. After making his incredibly addictive sandbox title Minecraft free to play two weekends ago, Persson raked in more than $350,000 in sales last Wednesday alone. Not bad considering that the reason for the promotion was actually to apologize for technical issues with the game’s master server.

Wikileaks in Disarray?

According to this report published on Threat Level, whistleblower site Wikileaks is in a state of absolute disarray following a rash of resignations over Julian Assange’s poor handling of the Iraq War Logs that the site plans to release on October 18. The article contains damning chat transcripts between Assange and one of his employees, Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

There are several reasons to be concerned about this news. For starters, Assange seems determined to release the Iraq papers as planned regardless of the fact that most of the people who were working on redacting names from the documents have quit. Such a move could put lives at risk. Second, it sounds like Assange himself is keeping secrets – an ironic and dangerous move on his part.

Lastly, I believe this excerpt speaks for itself.

“I am the heart and soul of this organization, its founder, philosopher, spokesperson, original coder, organizer, financier and all the rest,” Assange wrote Snorrason. “If you have a problem with me, piss off.”

I lost every shred of respect I had for Assange after reading that. It’s time for him to step down. The media’s focus on him and his site these past few months have clearly turned him into a megalomaniac.
