I’ve only played a couple of what I’d say were truly good horror games over the years – the first Silent Hill, one or two of the Resident Evil games, and of course Doom 3.

Those all pale in comparison to Amnesia.

I grabbed Amnesia on Steam the other day for $13.39. I thought that sounded a bit steep for a game that I would only be playing through once, maybe twice if it was really good. I stayed awake into the wee hours of the morning several nights in a row on my first play-through.

I do not suggest that anyone else does that. Especially not with headphones.

The truth is that Amnesia is the first and only game that has ever spooked me to the point that I decided to take a break. It’s not Doom 3 scary, though. No – this game is all about the psychological side of things. What you don’t encounter is far more frightening.

The thing that sets Amnesia apart from other games for me is twofold: the atmosphere and ambiance are amazing and I have zero complaints about the gameplay. I got so sucked into things at times that I had brief moments where I forgot that I was playing a game. That’s a rare thing these days and developer Frictional Games deserves kudos.

Bottom line: if you want to be scared by a video game, buy Amnesia. It’s worth the money.
