Bulletstorm Demo Impressions

I spent about an hour playing around with the Xbox 360 exclusive demo of Bulletstorm tonight and, to be honest, I have mixed feelings about it so far.

The graphics are stunning and the presentation is everything that one would expect to see in a game from People Can Fly and Epic. But it otherwise lacks much that sets it apart from other titles in the genre and I was sorely disappointed to find that it plays a lot like Gears of War. In other words, you’re stuck on a set path (for the most part) and you can’t jump unless you’re standing right in front of an obstacle. Lame.

I will say, however, that the dialogue, animations, and weapons are as hilarious as all of the trailers led me to believe. I was also impressed by the overall pace and flow of the game. It does suck you in and the combo system is a great addition. But the fact remains that it’s an unfortunately generic feeling run and gun shooter, gorgeous and solid though it may be.

But this is just the demo, after all. It’s entirely possible that the full game is infinitely more enjoyable and unique. Only time and a full play-through will tell!

Personally, I found Bulletstorm far more playable than Crysis 2, though the latter looked better IMO.

Bulletstorm was no-nonsense, over the top action with decent controls.
Crysis 2 was crowded, chaotic, too cluttered on the control department. It lagged like hell and a sniper that requires a double headshot is NOT a good sign.
