Minecraft 1.3 Beta

The Mojang team pushed out the 1.3 update for Minecraft yesterday, a few days earlier than anyone was expecting. Highlights include a new lighting system (which you don’t have to use if you don’t like it), beds, three new half-size blocks, delay/repeater redstone blocks, and a range of other bug fixes and tweaks.

Bulletstorm DLC Already Announced

Bulletstorm just hit store shelves today and already EA has announced plans for the first DLC – a pack called Gun Sonata.

Due out in Spring for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, Gun Sonata adds three new maps to the Anarchy mode: Sewers of Stygia, Hotel Elysium, and Villa. The pack also includes two brand new single player Echoes maps called Crash Sight and Guns of Stygia. While the retail Echoes maps are ripped direct from the campaign, these areas are completely new for the downloadable content.

You’ll also get fancy leash enhancements with the DLC called Flamingo and Pulp. But, of course, these are all things that could have easily been included in the retail release.

Red Faction: Armageddon – May 31st!

THQ and Volition have confirmed that the next installment in the Red Faction series, Armageddon, is due out on May 31st. The game, which is set 50 years after the events of Guerrilla, will build on Guerrilla’s story and that of the upcoming SyFy movie, Origins.

Expect nothing from me in the first week of June, in other words.

Microsoft Changes Stance, Embraces Kinect Hackers

Following a bizarre endorsement of Windows Phone 7 hackers a while back, Microsoft is now changing their stance regarding the “unauthorized” use of their Kinect controller as well. Although it was originally designed for the Xbox 360, the controller is arguably more popular with tinkerers bent on finding other uses for its powerful architecture.

The company is now planning to release a full software development kit for the device later this year. One can only imagine what will be done with the controller with official support.

Motorola Xoom Price Updates

It turns out that Best Buy mis-priced the pre-order for the Motorola Xoom, which they had originally set at a staggering $1,200 last week. It’s actually going to sell for $800 without a contract, as originally expected. But Verizon says you can grab one for $600 on contract, which includes a $20 per month agreement that gives you 1GB of data to use.
