I’ve played my way through the demo for Red Faction: Armageddon on the Xbox 360 five or six times, now. I don’t normally spend that much time with a demo – but if you’ve been reading What The Christ? for a while, you know that I’m a fanatic when it comes to this series.
Honestly, I don’t have a lot to say about the game. It’s as awesome as I was hoping it would be but it’s far removed from the open world concept that made Guerrilla such a blast to play. I’m not complaining, mind you. The team at Volition has said from the start that Armageddon would take a more linear tack.
And it does. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the Dead Space series. You’re zoomed in closer, you’re fighting aliens instead of humans, and there’s a distinct sense of urgency to things as you blow holes through anything and everything. Maybe it’s the fact that Armageddon’s story takes place under Mars as opposed to across its surface. Whatever it is, it works well. My pre-order on this one stands – not that I thought there’d be any reason to cancel it.
If you haven’t taken a minute to give this game a test run, do so. If nothing else, you owe it to yourself to check out the incredible weapons and the speaker-blowing sounds.
