Hothead Developing Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Games

Following the announcement of a new DeathSpank title this morning, Hothead Games also revealed that they’re working on a game series based on the famous Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy books. They’ve already launched a teaser site, which uses Quicktime for some bizarre reason. Megadodo Publications is handling publishing.

Expect to see more about this at E3 2011.

GameFly Acquires Direct2Drive From IGN

The rumors were true: GameFly has acquired digital distribution platform Direct2Drive from IGN for an undisclosed sum of money. As the only real Steam competitor, this puts GameFly in a much better position within the gaming industry.

It should be interesting to see how (or if) they change the Direct2Drive business model.

Valve Releases Portal 2 Music Free

As yet another “thank you” to the community, Valve released volume one of the music from Portal 2 for free today via the Think With Portals website. They also tossed in a set of six ringtones for Android and iPhone. Very cool!

Zynga to Issue $10 Billion IPO

If the rumors are true, social game maker Zynga is on the verge of issuing an IPO backed by Goldman-Sachs and other major banks to the tune of $10 billion. That would make them the second most valuable video game publisher in the world behind Activision Blizzard.

Yes, you read that correctly: FarmVille is about to eclipse EA and Ubisoft.

DeathSpank: The Baconing

Kotaku reports that Hothead Games plans to release a third DeathSpank title this summer dubbed The Baconing. The teaser trailer is below.

If you haven’t played either of the first two games in the series, you really ought to give them a shot. They’re basically comedy versions of Diablo.

Minecraft On Android!

Markus “Notch” Persson, head of Mojang, tweeted this picture of a very early build of Minecraft running on the Sony Xperia Play today. Mojang will be at E3 to show it off.

I foresee a lot of lost productivity at businesses around the world because of this port.

Ubisoft Announces Ghost Recon Online

Another day, another game publisher announces a “free to play” version of one of their most popular franchises. This time, it’s Ubisoft with the unveiling of a third person tactical shooter called Ghost Recon Online.
