EA Issues Statement On Steam Debacle
EA issued a statement late yesterday addressing the situation involving Valve and Dragon Age II being removed from Steam. Here’s what they have to say:
At EA, we offer our games and content to all major download services including GameStop, Amazon, Direct2Drive and Steam.
Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to sell downloadable content. No other download service has adopted this practice. Consequently some of our games have been removed by Steam.
We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam.
I hate to admit it but they do have a point. I’m not saying that EA’s recent behavior is any less reprehensible than Valve’s… but neither company is looking very good, here.
THQ Kills Red Faction Franchise
Today is a sad day for Red Faction fans. THQ chief executive Brian Farrell announced during a sales call this morning that Red Faction: Armageddon didn’t sell well and as a result, the company has made the decision to axe the franchise. Completely. The Volition team has been reassigned to Guillermo del Toro’s new inSane game project.
Here’s the direct quote:
We do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way.
This sucks. Sure, Armageddon wasn’t anywhere near as good as Guerrilla, but was that a reason to murder one of the longest-running franchises in first-person shooter history?
Anonymous, Lulz Security Spokesperson Arrested (Or Not?)
Police in London have arrested a 19 year old man who they believe is Topiary, one of the spokespeople for Anonymous and Lulz Security. The man, who has not been identified, was arrested at a residence in the Shetland Islands earlier this week.
But he may not be the real Topiary. According to rival hacker group Web Ninjas, a 23 year old Swedish citizen named Daniel Sandberg is the man the police really want.
Neither Lulz Security nor Anonymous, who busy with a strike at PayPal, have commented.

The Bagger 288
See that gigantic hunk of metal in the photo below? That’s the Bagger 288, an excavator built by the Krupps company for German mining firm Rheinbraun. It’s the largest land vehicle on Earth, weighing a ridiculous 13,500 tons and measuring 315 feet tall by 721 feet long.
The Bagger is capable of moving a quarter million tons of coal daily – enough to provide a full 15% of Germany’s electricity annually. It takes 16.56KW of power to turn on and is capable of a top driving speed of 33 feet per minute.

Nintendo Slashing Price On 3DS, Giving Away Games
Despite an aggressive marketing campaign and an all-star list of launch titles, Nintendo only moved (PDF) about 830,000 3DS handhelds during Q1.
In a desperate bid to increase that number, the company announced today that it will cut the price from $249 to $169 starting August 12th. And if you already own a 3DS, Nintendo wants you to know that they appreciate your business. Anyone who bought one before the price cut will receive ten free NES Virtual Console games and ten GBA Virtual Console games!
