CES 2012: Day Two Summary

Although most of the biggest and best CES 2012 announcements were made yesterday, there was still some exciting news today. Here’s a summary of some of today’s highlights.

  • Nikon demonstrated their new D4 DSLR, a damn-near $6,000 camera that isn’t nearly impressive enough to warrant the jaw-dropping price tag.
  • LG demo’ed their new cloud gaming app, which is powered by Gaikai. The service will basically allow you to game on LG HDTV units without a console attached.
  • Nyko showed up with a pair of speaker stands designed for the PS Vita and the Kindle Fire. They also have a Kindle Fire case with an extra battery in the works.
  • Razer pulled out an updated prototype of their Blade laptop, which now features an SSD and a functional trackpad on the right-hand side.
  • Griffin Technology showed their ridiculously cool new MIDI and audio interface for iPad musicians. It’s called StudioConnect and will retail for $149.
  • Line 6 demo’ed an awesome looking new hardware MIDI keyboard for iOS devices.
  • Viewsonic unveiled three LED computer monitors with more bells and whistles than I can even list here – everything from 3D to touch sensitivity to wireless tablet support.
  • The Ubuntu TV prototype made its public debut, clunky and ugly as it is.

is there any way to get live coverage?

D4 not impressive? Ken Rockwell, is that you?

Do you know of another camera that can shoot at 204k ISO? The D4 is a beast, and worth every penny to a professional photographer. Also, $6k is nothing when you start to add quality lenses.

Do you really know nothing about photography, or was your post just a comment about spending $6k on an electronic thing? Honest question.

$6K? Give me the MKII and 3 L lenses over the D4 any day.

Fine, you can always go down that road. For $6k, I’d rather have a D700 with the 14-24 and 24-70, and the 80-200 AF-S for another grand. It’s the kit I used to have before I sold it to buy my house. Spending $6k on a body is insane if you don’t need its features.

The D4 is overkill, ONLY if you don’t need it. Just like any other camera, or any other tool.

    • Mr. Pink says:

Yes, I know a fair bit about photography. $6,000 for the minor advances that the D4 made is excessive to say the least. It’s a lot of hype.

      • santaliqueur says:

You make it sound like the D4′s predecessors are all much cheaper than $6k. The D3 was $5k at its introduction, and the D3s was $5,500. $6k is not an outrageous price for a top of the line Nikon body lately. The D3 was released 4½ years ago. The extra $1,000 is pretty much just rising costs of high end equipment, combined with the horrible situation some Japanese companies were in after their disaster.

It’s at least as good or better than the D3s in every way. The only extra you may be paying is the increased cost over what the D3s was introduced at. An extra $500. I fail to see any “hype”.
