It turns out that the legendary Konami Code exists because the original Gradius was too hard. One of the game’s developers, Katsuhisa Hashimoto, inserted the famous cheat into the project because he was having a hard time beating certain levels during testing.

Hashimoto went on to work on several other Konami games, into which he inserted the same code for the same reason. The rest, as they say, is history.
