Mozilla is planning to launch a completely open mobile operating system called Firefox OS, the company revealed today. The kernel is based on open web standards and its apps will be written in HTML5. The first devices to run on the new OS are expected next year.
ZTE and TCL, two of China’s big mobile phone manufacturers, have committed to building a line of devices that run on the new system. Deutsche Telekom, the parent of T-Mobile, and Sprint have also voiced their support and intend to support Mozilla’s efforts.
