Several sources are reporting that chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices, commonly known by the acronym AMD, is preparing to reduce its workforce by as much as 30%.

The combination of intense competition from rival Intel and the slow economy has forced the company to rethink their structure despite solid sales in the mobile sector.

An official announcement about the downsizing is expected sometime next week.
