DIY Assassin’s Creed Wrist Blade
This guy built his own Assassin’s Creed style wrist blade out of random parts. Wow.
The iPoo
Programmer and designer Milos Paripovic finally made it happen: an Apple toilet. He’s even gone and created a webpage dedicated to the fake (but hilarious) concept.
There is a critical design flaw here, however. It’d be mighty uncomfortable for a dude to sit on one of these. Unless, of course, you’re cool with hanging your junk over the front lip.
The Samsung Smart Window
If you ask me, this insane tech from Samsung didn’t get nearly the attention that it deserved during CES 2012. The Smart Window basically brings Minority Report to life.
Seagate Partners With Monster Digital, Assumes We’re Idiots
In a move that amounts to PR suicide, Seagate has teamed up with Monster Digital to roll out a hard drive “upgrade kit” called Dakar. The package includes the drive, a screwdriver, a short instructional video covering installation of the drive, and a backup app on CD.
The truth is that these are nothing more than re-branded, repackaged versions of Seagate’s existing Momentus XT drives. They just cost twice as much. You can get the 750GB version for $289.99 or you can practically steal the 500GB version for $269.99.
CES 2012: Day Two Summary
Although most of the biggest and best CES 2012 announcements were made yesterday, there was still some exciting news today. Here’s a summary of some of today’s highlights.
- Nikon demonstrated their new D4 DSLR, a damn-near $6,000 camera that isn’t nearly impressive enough to warrant the jaw-dropping price tag.
- LG demo’ed their new cloud gaming app, which is powered by Gaikai. The service will basically allow you to game on LG HDTV units without a console attached.
- Nyko showed up with a pair of speaker stands designed for the PS Vita and the Kindle Fire. They also have a Kindle Fire case with an extra battery in the works.
- Razer pulled out an updated prototype of their Blade laptop, which now features an SSD and a functional trackpad on the right-hand side.
- Griffin Technology showed their ridiculously cool new MIDI and audio interface for iPad musicians. It’s called StudioConnect and will retail for $149.
- Line 6 demo’ed an awesome looking new hardware MIDI keyboard for iOS devices.
- Viewsonic unveiled three LED computer monitors with more bells and whistles than I can even list here – everything from 3D to touch sensitivity to wireless tablet support.
- The Ubuntu TV prototype made its public debut, clunky and ugly as it is.
Apple Making “Education Announcement” On January 19th
As anticipated, Apple once again stole some of the spotlight from CES this morning with news that they’re planning something big in New York on January 19th.
Oddly enough, they’re billing it as an “education” announcement. We know that it’s not going to be an iPhone related event. Could this just be a clever disguise for the mythical iPad 3 that everyone’s been buzzing about over the past few months? My vote is, “Yes.”
The Waterproof iPhone 4S
A company called Liquipel has developed a method of completely waterproofing your cell phone such that you can actually use it underwater. They’ve even gone and proven it with a product demonstration video. (Warning: Do not try this at home, kids.)
Unfortunately, the only way to get your phone treated with the chemical used by Liquipel is to send them your phone for a few days. However, they’re trying to work directly with a handful of manufacturers to bring their product to market as a standard option.
CES 2012: Day One Summary
Dozens of major tech companies debuted hundreds of their newest gadgets and technology during opening day of CES 2012 today. Here’s a summary of product announcements that we’re still going to care and want to hear more about a month from now.
- Razer unveiled an awesome looking new gaming tablet dubbed Project Fiona.
- ViewSonic and EXOPC unveiled a 32″ multi-touch surface called EXOdesk.
- A company called Innergie debuted their PocketCell portable device charger.
- Vizio carpet bombed the audience with new products – everything from a whole new line of television sets to all-in-one desktops, laptops, a new tablet, and more. (My favorite toy of the show so far is their new $100 Stream Player. It’s a no-brainer buy.)
- A company called BlueStacks debuted its Android app player for Windows.
- Corning unveiled Gorilla Glass 2, which is 20% thinner than the original.
- Canon shot their competition in the face with their new G1 X point and shoot.
- LG introduced a new 84″ Ultradefinition 4K 3DTV that nobody can afford.
- Samsung unveiled a ridiculously gorgeous 55″ OLED TV.
- Sony confirmed that the U.S. launch of the PS Vita will include Netflix support.
- Just about every company at the show unveiled new televisions, Blu-ray players, tablets, cameras, and ugly-ass cell phones that no one will end up actually buying. There was a lot of static on the show floor today. I covered the “big ones” here.
Kinect For Windows Coming February 1st
Microsoft confirmed yesterday that Kinect For Windows lands in stores on February 1st – for $250. Yes, that’s a full $100 more than the Xbox 360 version. Oh, and it only works if you have the software development kit installed on your machine.
Why the price hike? Nobody seems to know. Microsoft hasn’t provided an explanation.
Vimeo Teases New iOS, Android, and Windows Phone Apps
Video hosting site Vimeo intends to make a splash at CES with news of an updated iOS app that supports the iPad in addition to ports for Android and Windows Phone devices.
The iOS update includes full support for HD video streaming. Both the Android and Windows Phone versions allow you to upload directly from a device and gives you the ability to create a “watch later” queue. Huzzah! I’ve been waiting for this news for quite a while.
