Circuit City Liquidation Underway

Well, that didn’t take long. Circuit City has already started running liquidation sales to clear out their stores and warehouses. They aren’t officially closing it down until the end of March, though, so it might be a good idea to wait a while before trying to find any really outstanding deals.

At the moment, their prices are barely within range of those that you’ll find at other big box stores like Costco and Best Buy. (Costco, of course, kicks Best Buy’s ass when it comes to deals on electronics and DVDs.) I’m sure that will change as we draw closer to the last day of operation.

I’ll definitely highlight any major sales that occur over the next few weeks.

Circuit City: Closing Shop

In case you haven’t already heard, electronics giant Circuit City is closing its doors for good in the wake of recent bankruptcy proceedings. The retailer had sought a buyer but was unable to find one in time to save more than 500 store locations and 34,000 employees from the fate that they’re now facing.

Circuit City has been around for roughly sixty years. This is another sign of a struggling global economy and the recession that has gripped our nation. We wish those who lost their jobs the best of luck in finding new ones elsewhere in the industry.

nVidia Struggles with Financial Meltdown

nVidia, the world’s leading graphics chipset manufacturer, has warned that their Q4 sales will be down as much as 40 to 50%. They originally projected a Q4 decline of roughly 5%. That’s a huge difference that will definitely have a long lasting impact on both the company and the gaming industry.

nVidia representatives cited a decline in demand from retailers who are trying to keep inventory low due to the downturn in consumer spending. Fortunately, the company has several new product launches coming in 2009 that should help to bolster sales. That’s good news for those of us who buy their cards.

Steve Jobs is Stepping Down (Temporarily)

In a strange contradiction to his own report just a few short weeks ago, Steve Jobs has decided to temporarily step down as CEO of Apple to deal with his weight loss issues. Apple’s COO, Tim Cook, will step in as acting CEO until the end of June, when Jobs is slated to return. (I’m guessing that he just stays gone. By then, people will be used to it, anyway.)

This is a big surprise and will probably hurt Apple’s sales in the short run because of how closely Jobs’ health seems to tie to the company’s success.

Nintendo DSi Coming to US on April 4

IGN is saying that three separate sources have confirmed the Nintendo DSi for an April 4th release. The price point is said to be $179.99.

This new iteration of the Nintendo DS will have two 0.3 megapixel cameras, an SD card slot, 256MB of onboard memory, and content that you can download directly to your device from the DSi Store.

The downside is that the battery is 25% shorter on life, the GBA slot has been removed, and these will be damn near impossible to find in stores for a long, long time.

Sadly, it’s already sold. But they’re planning to make a hand-held model!

13 Year Old Girl Sends 14,528 Texts in a Month

According to this UPI report, a 13 year old girl named Reina Hardesty who lives in Silverado Canyon, California somehow managed to send 14,528 text messages in a single month. That’s one message every two minutes. Her dad doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal because they have an unlimited plan. He’s simply instituted a new house rule – no texting after dinner at night.

Seriously. Take the phone away from the kid. She needs to get a life.

Man Steals $200,000 in Jewelery from K-Mart

Check out this article on CBS12. Some guy in Orlando, Florida managed to swipe more than $200,000 worth of gold and jewelry from a K-Mart there. The police haven’t caught him, yet.

I can’t believe that a K-Mart had more than $200,000 worth of jewelry. I didn’t even know they sold jewelry. I haven’t been into one of those places in years.

Death Row Inmate Removes Eye, Eats It

A prison inmate on death row in Houston, Texas pulled out his “good eye” and, according to what he told the guards when they found him, he ate it. He has a history of mental problems, so I guess it isn’t a huge surprise that he did something crazy, but eating your own eye is pretty high on the list of insanity.

How he was able to handle the pain of ripping out his own eye is beyond me. You can read more in this Dallas News article.
