Sony Investigating PSN Downtime

For those of you who aren’t aware, the PlayStation Network has been down for the past six days. Sony confirmed a few days ago that it’s a result of an “external intrusion”. But it’s not hackers from Anonymous retaliating over the prosecution of PS3 hackers this time, at least according to a spokesman for the group.

And that denial has a lot of people worried that whoever did bring the service down did so to gain access to credit card numbers and personal information belonging to PS3 owners.

Sony is conducting a “thorough investigation” according to a spokesman for the company. Still no word on when service will return, however.

George Hotz Donates Donations Left Over From Legal Defense Fund to Electronic Frontier Foundation

Sony’s decision to settle their case against PS3 hacker George “Geohot” Hotz outside of court left a lot of money in his donation based legal defense fund. Instead of trying to be a douche and make away with the leftovers, Hotz instead wrote a check for $10,000 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Here’s what he had to say about the gesture.

This money goes to the EFF in hopes that America can one day again be a shining example of freedom, free of the DMCA and ACTA, and that private interest will never trump the ideas laid out in the constitution of privacy, ownership, and free speech.

Maybe he’s not such a giant prick, after all! Or maybe he’s just trying to avoid a shit storm.

Windows 8 Leaked

Windows 8 leaked onto the web yesterday. Several reliable sources have confirmed that it is in fact a genuine copy of Microsoft’s next operating system. It’s dubbed Milestone 1, Build 7850 and is the final build in Milestone 1 of alpha development.

We don’t link to pirated materials here on What The Christ? or condone downloading illegal copies of software but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to find the ISO if you’re interested.

Sony Reaches Settlement With PS3 Hacker

In a bit of a surprise move, Sony announced this morning that they’ve reached an agreement outside of court with PS3 hacker George “Geohot” Hotz. Not much is known about the deal at this point except that Hotz has agreed to some sort of permanent injunction. In other words, he can never distribute a hack for one of Sony’s consoles again.

And that’s the end of that – except for the fact that the console is still jailbroken.

Anonymous Apologizes For Disrupting PSN Users

Anonymous has issued an apology after substantial backlash from the PS3 community over their crippling attack on the PlayStation Network online game service.

“Anonymous is not attacking the PSN at this time. We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.

Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.”

Way to go, guys. Alienate the people you’re supposedly fighting for!

Anonymous Declares War On Sony

It appears that Sony managed to upset Anonymous, the 4chan-borne hacktivist group, with their recent lawsuits against PS3 hackers GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo. A statement from the group reads (at least in part) as follows:

“You have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal action against our fellow hackers, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo, has not only alarmed us, it has been deemed wholly unforgivable.

Unfortunately for Anonymous, this comes at a time when the group is experiencing quite a substantial amount of internal strife. A splinter group known as Backtrace is threatening to release personal information on its members due to them becoming “arrogant sociopaths.”

Update: Sony.com, Playstation.com, and the PlayStation Network are all currently down. It would appear that Anons made good on their promise.

iPad 2 Hash Uncovered

A member of Dev Team, one of several groups working toward a jailbreak for the new iPad, announced via Twitter yesterday that the group has in fact discovered the hash for the device. It should only be a few weeks now before they’re able to put together a full exploit – and then we can really see what the new hardware is capable of.

Sony Accuses PS3 Hacker of Sabotaging Hard Drives and Fleeing to South America

Sony claimed in a court filing yesterday that PS3 hacker George Hotz sabotaged the hard drives that he was ordered by a judge to turn over and then fled to South America. Stewart Kellar, Hotz’s lawyer says that he simply didn’t provide them with the controller card for the drives initially but that he has since fully complied with the court’s orders.

As for fleeing the country, his lawyer refuses to comment other than to say that Hotz is working with the court every step of the way. It is a civil case, after all, so chances are he’s just taking a vacation – or intentionally trying to piss Sony off, which is more likely.
