Iron Man Flight Simulator
This “Iron Man Flight Simulator” was built using a small crane, a hang glider harness, a pair of unmanned aircraft wings, a propeller and engine taken from a microlight, VR goggles, a Nintendo Wii remote and Google Earth Flight Simulator.
Incredible War Machine Cosplay
This is some truly inspired work, right here.
Human Infected with Computer Virus
Dr. Mark Gasson of the University of Reading has become the first human in history infected with a computer virus. Gasson contaminated an RFID computer chip similar to those used for keeping track of pets and injected it into his hand. He was then able to successfully pass the virus from his hand to external host systems.
The BBC has more details, if you’re interested.
The Pirate Bay Finds a New Home
Less than a day after The Pirate Bay was knocked out by an injunction filed against their host Cyberbunker by several Hollywood film studios, Sweden’s Piratpartiet (Pirate Party) has taken up the task of hosting the most infamous website online.
This is major news, as the Pirate Party is an official political party in Sweden that holds two seats in European Parliament. It looks like things are about to get very interesting in the world of copyright debate.
LifeLock CEO’s Identity Stolen 13 Times
Threat Level has learned that Todd Davis, CEO of the controversial identity protection service LifeLock, has himself been the victim of identity theft a total of thirteen times as a result of his campaign advertising his Social Security number on the side of trucks.
Although LifeLock refuses to comment on the story, the company is currently under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission for operating a scam. (The FTC says that the company’s $10 per month protection service does effectively nothing to protect your personal information from thieves.)
Firefly Interactive Lighting
From the video description on Vimeo:
Commissioned for Shanghai World Expo 2010, as a part of lighting design of the Urban Best Practices Area, Firefly is an interactive environment displaying behavior that is similar to a cloud of glowing insects.
Sensitive to movements around, fireflies wriggle, light up and scatter when visitors get in touch with them. The cloud alternately disperses and merges… and its shape evolves to take a different appearance, again and again.
Mobile GameCube
An ambitious modder who goes by techknott over on the ModRetro forums came up with this ridiculously sexy mobile GameCube concept. The build quality appears to be on par with that of Ben Heck’s creations.
I’ve always thought that the GameCube was an awesome and highly underrated platform.
World of WarCraft On the iPad
I swore a while back that my coverage of the iHype would be minimal… but this is actually rather awesome.
Thanks to a cloud based browser-binded streaming service called Gaikai, it will soon be possible to play World of WarCraft – and just about any other game – on the Apple iPad. All of the inputs are apparently translated in real time by a system on the Gaikai servers.
The service is currently in beta. There is no hard release date at the moment.
If this kind of innovation with the iPad continues, I may yet find a reason to buy one. That is of course provided that someone (i.e. Asus) doesn’t come out with something better, first.
Tweaks and Hacks for Windows
TechRadar posted a great list of tweaks and hacks that work in Windows XP, Vista, and 7.
I learned a few handy new shortcuts, so I thought this was a good one to pass along.
Form Constant
From the clip description:
Form Constant is a collaboration between dancer/choreographer Hope Goldman and her partner, visual artist/programmer Andrew Moffat. It was performed live in March 2010 in the Studio Dance 1 Concert at the Krannert Center the Performing Arts as Goldman’s Master’s thesis show.
To perform the real-time tracking and effects, the piece uses infrared lighting and a custom-modded, $40 webcam along with custom software running on the GPU.
The choreography was influenced by the ideas of fluid dynamics and the energetic quality of the imagery.
Music by Ben Frost.
I’m personally a huge fan of the music. I love distorted, glitchy sounds like this.
