Pirates of the Amazon

Someone has apparently developed a plug-in for Firefox that allows users to shop on Amazon.com without paying for anything that could otherwise be acquired digitally via The Pirate Bay. It’s called Pirates of the Amazon, and I’m sure that Amazon’s executives are flaming pissed about it.

Check the original article on TorrentFreak for more.

Wireless Security: WEP is Bad, Mmkay?

I watched someone crack a WEP key in just under 60 seconds today, which got me to thinking about how secure my home network is. For those of you who run a wireless home network “protected” by WEP, the fact that it can be broken in 60 seconds should scare you. In fact, it should more or less tell you that WEP is a horribly broken encryption type.

I also learned that WPA2 Personal is probably your best bet for a home solution right now. It’s a relatively secure way of protecting yourself. You should also consider using custom MAC addresses, changing and then cloaking your SSID (although there ARE ways around this), and restricting port access. Of course, it’s a good idea to make adjusting your various keys and passwords a part of your maintenance routine, as well.

You can do all of this through the administrative settings on any modern router. For an exhaustive list of the IP addresses and default usernames and passwords needed to access your router’s control panel, click here.

Now, go switch your router settings!

Untraceable Email

This was referenced in Traitor last night but it’s an old trick that I would think a lot of people have probably used for various purposes – legal and otherwise. Basically, there’s a really easy way to send untraceable email messages to whoever you want without ever actually sending the email.

It’s actually really quick and easy. All you do is sign up for a free email account with a service like Hotmail or Yahoo. Then, you write your message – but you don’t send it to your intended recipient. Instead, you just save the email as a draft and then you give the intended recipient the login information for the account. Voila. You now have your own back-and-forth messaging service that is more or less untraceable… because there’s really nothing to trace.

I’m not responsible for anything you may choose to use this for.

5 Ways to Fix Stuck Pixels

Got a stuck pixel? It’s annoying as hell, isn’t it?

There may be a way to fix it. MakeUseOf has an article covering five methods for fixing stuck pixels. There are actually quite a few applications out there built specifically for resolving the problem. I was actually able to eliminate a stuck pixel on one of my smaller monitors using this article yesterday.

Hacking Airport Wi-Fi

Forbes has an interesting new article up by Taylor Buley, a reporter from Silion Valley, about poorly secured wi-fi networks in the airline industry and how easy it is for snoops to take advantage. I found the article particularly interesting for personal reasons but I think it’s a good read for anyone who travels by plane on a frequent basis.

You can check out the author’s website here.

Hacking the Cable Modem

Note: I am not responsible for anything that you choose to do with the knowledge that I am about to impart upon you.

Hacking the Cable Modem is a book about hacking and uncapping broadband modems written by DerAngel. I bought a copy about a year ago and have since lent it to a few of my closest friends at one time or another.

Not only does this book provide you with a complete overview of the world of cable modem hacking – it also dives into some of the details. Of course, breaking into your modem is illegal unless you own it and even if you do own it, it’s illegal to use one.

However, if you’re interested in a good, geeky read, then this is definitely a book to check out. You can grab a copy on Amazon.

Johnny Chung Lee – Wii Projects

This guy Johnny Chung Lee, a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University who now works at Microsoft, has a website through which he showcases some of the amazing things he’s come up with. Among the sections of his site is one dedicated exclusively to the things Johnny has been able to do with Nintendo Wii hardware. I don’t want to spoil the surprise – just check it out.

Pandora

Check out the Pandora if you haven’t seen it already. It’s a Linux based open source device that appears to be a combination of a Nintendo DS and a palm computer. They describe it as an “ultra portable open source computer with gaming controls”.

Seems very cool to me. The emulation possibilities for this are very, very good.

Wii Homebrew Working Again!

According to this article on Gizmodo, Wii homebrew is working again and there is now support for SDHC cards. Damn, that was fast. I suppose it won’t take long for Nintendo to fire back – or maybe they’ll just give up? Who knows.
