Rod Blagojevich Convicted On 17 Counts of Corruption

Rod Blagojevich, the disgraced former governor of Illinois, was convicted of 17 out of 20 charges of corruption today stemming from several shakedown attempts and an absolutely insane attempt at selling Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat.

Blagojevich told reporters outside the courthouse that he and his wife were “stunned” by the verdict. He’s now looking at somewhere in the range of ten years behind bars. He technically faces 300 years but federal regulations would prevent that from happening.

New York Legalizes Gay Marriage

The New York Senate passed the controversial Marriage Equality Act last night, making same-sex marriage legal across the state. After months of intense debate from both sides of the aisle, the measure passed by a narrow 33 to 29 vote. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law shortly after the decision was made public.

New York is the 6th state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage. The other five are Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Iowa.

Japanese Poop Burger Story a Fake?

It turns out that the horrible poop burger story from a few days back may in fact be a giant fake. Salon.com did a rather convincing investigation. I must say – I’m relieved.

“Worrying Is For Fools,” Says Lulz Security Leader

Gawker landed a somewhat exclusive interview with one of the apparent leaders of hacker collective Lulz Security, which made headlines once again yesterday by hacking their way into internal servers belonging to the Arizona Department of Public Safety and publishing more than a few documents and emails in retaliation for the state’s illegal immigration laws.

In short, Lulz Security isn’t afraid of its associates or members being arrested, they’re not afraid to out their own if they think someone is cooperating with authorities, and they plan to continue waging war on government entities the world over – especially the United States.

(I think that just about covers everything big that LulzSec has done this week.)

Deceased Jackass Star Drunk at Time of Crash

Pennsylvania police said today that Jackass star Ryan Dunn was drunk before crashing his Porsche 911 GT3 at close to 130mph on Monday, killing himself and a friend in a fiery crash. Tests show he had a blood alcohol level of 0.196 - more than twice the legal limit.

Dunn, 34, and his passenger, Zach Hartwell, a former Navy SEAL and friend of Dunn’s who had worked with some members of the Jackass crew, had been drinking at a Philadelphia bar called Barnaby’s in the hours before the crash. Dunn had a prior DUI conviction.

Barnaby’s could actually be on the hook for this crash. Pennsylvania has a “dram shop law” that makes bars and restaurants that serve alcohol responsible if they’ve provided drinks to someone who’s clearly inebriated and later crashes

Jackass Star Ryan Dunn Dies In Car Wreck

Ryan Dunn of Jackass and CKY fame reportedly killed himself and an unidentified passenger early this morning in a fiery car wreck outside of Goshen, Pennsylvania. Dunn’s Porsche 911 GT3 was engulfed in flames by the time police and medics arrived at the scene of the crash.

Witnesses say Dunn was drinking with friends at a bar in nearby West Chester last night. The manager of the bar, Jim O’Brien, said, “He didn’t seem to be intoxicated at the time he left. Ryan was not a hardcore drinker, at least not when he was here.” Police believe that speed was definitely a factor in the crash, however.

New York Post Blocks iPad Access

In what amounts to nothing more than a desperate bid to drive iPad users toward their official app, the New York Post has blocked the tablet’s native Safari browser from accessing their website, serving up an ad for the app instead of the content users are looking for. They aren’t blocking Skyfire or Opera Mini yet – but that’s not the point.

When is the newspaper industry going to realize that their model is dead?

Alcoholic Man Drinks Hand Sanitiser

A man undergoing treatment at the Alfred hospital in Melbourne, Australia drank six bottles of hand sanitiser, causing a blood alcohol level of .271 and prompting calls for the hospital to place new controls on the liquid.

The 45 year old man had been undergoing treatment for alcohol-related gastritis (because of course) when he drank the 375ml bottles, which have an ethanol content of 66 per cent and are routinely used by medical staff to prevent infections spreading between patients.

South Korea Accidentally Fires On Commercial Airline

Two members of the South Korean marine corps accidentally opened fire on a commercial jet yesterday after misidentifying it as a North Korean air force fighter plane.

It’s unclear as to how they made such a huge mistake but the important thing is that they failed to do any damage to the aircraft, which belongs to Asiana. Of course, it may have something to do with the fact that they were shooting at it for close to ten minutes with K-2 rifles.
