Facebook Acquires Instagram
Hot on the heels of their Android release last week, the Instagram team just announced that they’ve been acquired by Facebook for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock.
That ain’t too shabby at all considering that Instagram is just a tiny camera app. Then again, it has an absolutely massive social network behind it. If you can’t beat ‘em, buy ‘em!
New York City Bus Hits Mattress, Ignites, Torches Six Vehicles
The S53, a bus from Staten Island, struck a twin-size mattress just after 11:00p.m. this past Thursday night and dragged it over the Verrazano Bridge.
One of the mattress springs punctured the gas tank, igniting a blaze that torched the bus and six parked cars before firefighters managed to put it out. No one was hurt.
As you can see from the photo below, the S53 is done. Only in New York.
“Painter of Light” Thomas Kinkade Dead at 52
Thomas Kinkade, known as the “Painter of Light”, has died. He was 52 years old.
If you live in the United States and have been to a shopping mall in the past decade, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Kincade’s work. His Media Arts Group, which was at one point publicly traded, took in $32 million quarterly from 4,500 dealers nationwide.
Kincade’s cause of death is unknown. Authorities do not believe foul play was involved.
Viktor Bout Sentenced to 25 Years, Russia Wants Him Back
Viktor Bout, the notorious arms dealer who was captured in Thailand a few years ago, was sentenced by a judge in New York City to 25 years behind bars yesterday.
But that may not happen if Russia has anything to say about it. Russian officials say they are planning to ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to order the 45 year old ex-Soviet officer, whose nickname is the Merchant of Death, returned to his homeland.
Bout’s “career” was the basis for the Nicolas Cage movie Lord of War.
Jim Marshall, Founder of Marshall Amps, Dead at 88
Jim Marshall, whose Marshall brand amplifiers were used by such music legends as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 88 years old.
Yahoo Cuts 2,000 Employees
As he promised last month, Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson started cleaning house today. A full 15% of the company’s total workforce is being let go as part of a drastic restructuring that will really only serve to prolong the former tech titan’s inevitable demise.
It’s always sad and frustrating to see people lose their jobs due to poor management.
EA Wins “Worst Company In the World” Award
Electronic Arts was officially granted the title of “Worst Company In the World” today by The Consumerist based on a poll of its readers. EA beat out Bank of America in the final round of voting, 64.03% to 35.97%. The company immediately issued the following statement.
We’re sure that British Petroleum, AIG, Philip Morris, and Halliburton are all relieved they weren’t nominated this year.
We’re going to continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide.
I must admit, they have a point. They are, after all, merely a video game publisher.
Three People Split Record Mega Millions Jackpot
Three people will split a record $640 million Mega Millions jackpot after last night’s drawing. The winning tickets were sold in Maryland, Illinois, and Kansas. Thousands of other players across the United States will cash in on second and third tier wins – most of them for prizes of $250,000 and $10,000 – when lottery offices open for business on Monday morning.
Massive Credit Card Breach Touches All Major Brands
Krebs On Security reported today that one of the largest credit card processing companies in the world was breached this week. More than ten million card numbers were stolen.
The Wall Street Journal has independently confirmed the report from Krebs, saying sources indicate that the breached processor was in fact Global Payments, Inc.
Every major credit card brand including VISA and MasterCard is affected.
