Dick Cheney Receives Heart Transplant
Dick Cheney, the former United States V.P. who helped George Bush launch not one but two horrible wars in the Middle East is (sadly) in recovery tonight after a heart transplant at a Virginia hospital earlier today.
Cheney, 71, has battled with heart disease for decades. He’s had five heart attacks, the most recent of which was back in 2010.
I really hope the devil has a pineapple waiting for this motherfucker. He certainly deserves it.
UN Torture Chief Accuses US of Abusing Bradley Manning
Juan Mendez, special rapporteur on torture for the United Nations, just completed his 14-month investigation into the case of Bradley Manning. He concludes that the man accused of leaking thousands of confidential diplomatic cables to Wikileaks has been abused during the course of his detention by the United States government.
“The special rapporteur concludes that imposing seriously punitive conditions of detention on someone who has not been found guilty of any crime is a violation of his right to physical and psychological integrity as well as of his presumption of innocence,” Mendez writes.
However, Mendez told The Guardian that he could not reach a conclusion on whether the prisoner has been tortured because the military has repeatedly denied requests to interview Manning under “acceptable circumstances”. (The Pentagon has refused to allow Mendez to see Manning in private, insisting that all conversations must be monitored.)
Pat Robertson Supports Legalizing Marijuana
Evangelical leader Pat Robertson is known for being a lot of things. Annoying. Bigoted. A bit crazy (to say the least). And now, we can add marijuana supporter to the list.
Yes, that’s right. Pat motherfucking Robertson thinks it’s a good idea to legalize pot. To be precise, he thinks we should treat it “the way we treat beverage alcohol”.
I’m at a total loss for words on this one, honestly.
Bradley Manning Formally Charged
Bradley Manning, the American soldier who was arrested last year on several charges that he aided enemies of the State by leaking a mountain of confidential documents to Wikileaks, was formally charged with aiding the enemy today. No court date has been set but Manning’s lawyer has made it clear that he objects to anything beyond June of this year.
The prosecution doesn’t intend to seek the death penalty. However, Manning does face life in prison if he’s convicted of the most serious charge against him.
Washington State Legalizes Gay Marriage
Christine Gregoire, the Governor of Washington State, signed a bill that both recognizes and allows gay marriage today. Washington joins six other states (MA, NH, VT, CT, IA, NY) and the District of Columbia in recognizing same-sex marriage.
The law doesn’t take effect until June 7th, however, meaning opponents have until June 6th to gather 120,000 signatures necessary to stop the bill and put the issue on November’s ballot.
Anonymous Takes Down CIA Website
Anonymous claimed responsibility for knocking out the CIA website via DDoS yesterday – and they managed to keep it down for almost 24 hours. The group also took down several state government servers in Alabama and Mexico for various political reasons.
If you’re interested, MSNBC has a good summary of what’s been happening.
Firefighters vs. Police
This is insane footage of Belgian firefighters who broke through police lines and hosed the prime minister’s office in Brussels to protest the government’s tougher retirement plans.
