What The Christ? Invades Facebook

After much deliberation, I decided today to start a Facebook profile for myself and a fan page for What The Christ? I did this both because we’re always looking for new ways to broaden our audience and because I was worried that someone might claim our name for a fan page of their own – and we don’t want that for obvious reasons.

So, friend me and like the shit out of us. Who knows? We might even use this as a means of giving cool things away at some point down the road.

Note: My real name is not in fact Steve McWinn. I had to give Facebook something to display as my name and it wasn’t allowing me to use “Mr. Pink”.

Tumblr Mirror, RAR Archives, VIP Discount, Site Upgrades, the Return of Mr. Black, and Women of WTC

I mentioned the other day that it’s going to be a big weekend for What The Christ? This is the complete rundown of what we’re working on right now:

  • Tumblr – With a bit of help from our friend Mr. Six, we’re working on posting a mirror of everything that Mr. Blue has ever posted to the site on a Tumblr feed. I’m sure you can imagine how long that’s taking. Expect it sometime next week.
  • RAR Archives – We’ve had a lot of internal discussion regarding how to go about covering bandwidth costs associated with the RAR archives that everyone wants. I made a decision on how to handle this yesterday. Stay tuned for more.
  • VIP Discount – We’re bringing back the “2 for 1″ guest pass promotion starting tomorrow. It’s always been our most popular way of bringing in a massive wave of new VIP sign-ups. We might also throw in some other perks.
  • Site Upgrades – You’ve probably already noticed that things are loading up a bit quicker over the past 24 hours. That’s due to a RAM upgrade. We’re also going to make a few simple changes to the template files driving the site to decrease load.
  • Mr. Black – I just got word from Mr. Black that he’s finally working on some new material for the site. Expect the first entry in a three part series called “Viva Los Vegas” to hit the site sometime soon.
  • Women of WTC – Several new ones inbound – both for the public site and in the VIP area. Mr. Blue has been hard at work on this.

That’s all for now. Thanks, as always, for continuing to visit the site!

Big Weekend Plans

We’ve got several big things on our weekend agenda – a VIP promotion, several new pieces of exclusive content, a huge announcement regarding the site overall, and the launch of our newest site feature – something that we think everyone is going to love.

General Maintenance

We’re doing some server maintenance today (reducing our footprint by almost 30% via an interesting new image compression trick) in addition to some work on the forums.

Speaking of the forums, you have my apologies for the recent spam issues and our lack of a decision regarding administrator selection. We simply haven’t had the time to focus on that part of the site and still keep everything else running smooth. Mr. Maroon is now heading up the forums, so you should start to see things that have been brought up addressed. He’s also going to be making the admin selections sometime this week.

UPDATE – Many thanks go out to Alex Dunae, whose implementation of Smush.it (and his wonderful accompanying Bash script for legacy images) is helping us reduce the impact of image load times on the site by an estimated 38%. We owe you several beers, man!

Possibly Coming Soon: Monthly RAR Archives

We get emails at least a dozen times each week from people asking us if there’s a quick and easy way to download all of my posts in some sort of RAR archive. Unfortunately, we don’t have the kind of bandwidth to add that feature to the public facing site. We’re already in an ongoing bandwidth crunch. (We rip through up to ten terabytes per month on average.)

Regardless, we decided to sit down and discuss options yesterday due to an overwhelming surge of demand in recent weeks – especially from new VIP members who understandably want a quicker and easier way to grab older content. We’re not quite sure how we’re going to do things just yet but I did want to share with you all that we are planning to implement some sort of monthly RAR archive for our VIP following.

We’re still running the numbers to see what’s feasible. Whatever we do, it’s only going to be available to VIP members and it will include content from both the main site and VIP.

Stay tuned for more details.

The Second Annual WTC Holiday Extravaganza

What, did you actually think we’d let Christmas come and go without holding our second annual WTC Holiday Extravaganza? Not a chance!

In addition to the VIP Holiday Motherload, which we’ve been working hard on for the past two weeks, we’re once again giving away a pile of cool shit to a handful of lucky VIPs.

Here’s the loot list for 2010:

- 1x Call of Duty: Black Ops*
- 1x Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood*
- 1x Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit*
- 1x TRON: Legacy Soundtrack CD

* Winner picks format (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

We’re also going to pick one extremely lucky VIP who will receive a $150 “shopping spree” on Steam. (The winner gives us their list and we buy them the games.)

Winners will be selected at random from the pool of paid VIP accounts on Christmas Day. (Sorry, free accounts won’t be eligible. It just wouldn’t be fair.)

The Lonely Island – I Just Had Sex (Our 9,000th Post!)

I can’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate reaching 9,000 posts than posting the new Lonely Island track.

Due to recent problems with anonymous comment spam and trolling, you now need to be a registered user in order to comment on the articles posted on What The Christ?

There are two ways to register: click here or you can click on the “log in” link at the bottom of the comments on any post. It takes two seconds. All you have to do is select a user name and provide a valid email address.

The first time you log in, you can set a new password and complete your profile in our new profile controls area. You can revisit the profile controls for your account at any time. Just click on the link in the site header.

VIP Account Sales to Resume, Server Upgrade Inbound

We should have the VIP account sales system back online this evening. I also plan to have the new comment registration system up and running by late tonight. (Mr. Blue has been testing it to make sure that it’s abuse-proof.)

Lastly, we’re upping the RAM in the main server and adding another hard drive tomorrow to bump up the overall speed of the site a bit. We’re also going to test some new methods of caching pages and server calls to reduce the load.

In other words, we’re back to business as usual within the next 24 hours.

Handling Assholes

Last night, an individual who will for the time being remain nameless took it upon himself to launch an attack against What The Christ? I’m not going to divulge the nature of the attack, nor am I going to share the outcome.

I am, however, going to do something about it.

This individual is under the impression that he’s anonymous. He’s not. In fact, we know his real name and street address. (He’s a VIP member. Oh, the stupidity.) We haven’t decided how we’re going to respond at this point, aside from suspending VIP account sales until we can get a new payment mechanism in place. (That was one target of his attack.) We’re still discussing options. Whatever we do, it’s going to involve our lawyer.

What we have decided, however, is that we need to take measures to ensure that we don’t have problems like this in the future. Unfortunately, this means that we’re going to have to burden you all with some minor inconveniences.

For starters, anonymous commenting is about to disappear. We’re going to require users to register from here on out, and you’ll need a valid email address to do so. We just don’t have the time or the patience to chase trolls out of the yard anymore. We’re also going to take an aggressive stance against anonymous proxy connections to the server.

And by “aggressive”, I mean we’re going to sue the fuck out of anyone who pulls shenanigans that result in downtime. I tried to be a nice guy about this sort of shit in the past. No more.

I realize that this is all rather unpleasant and I don’t want to force the majority to endure a hassle because of a few bad apples. I do, however, feel compelled to protect the site that we have invested so much time and effort into building. As always, I’m nothing but thankful to those of you who have continued to show us support over the past few years.
