Hard Locking

I upgraded the core components in my PC a few weeks ago – motherboard, video card, RAM, and CPU. Unfortunately, it appears that the motherboard I bought (MSI NF980-G65) is a giant piece of crap. It keeps hard locking at random – even when I’m just browsing the web. I’ve already isolated the problem to the board and I have a much nicer Asus model coming via FedEx overnight. I apologize if updates are a bit random over the next few days.

Cloudy With a Chance of Fucking Awesome

A bunch of fucking awesome exclusive content is coming to What The Christ? in the next couple of weeks – including the long overdue return of Women of WTC. (Mr. Blue tells me that he’s working on something huge on that front but he won’t share details.) We’re also in the process of bringing Random Hotness back online and we’ve been testing a new shoutbox widget that could prove to be a lot of fun.

Keep your eyes peeled. Good shit is incoming.

The Legend Continues

A few weekends ago, I made the announcement that I would be stepping down as owner and administrator of What The Christ? I made the decision largely out of necessity. This website takes a tremendous amount of time and energy to maintain.

But so does anything worth doing.

Last week, our server crashed – hard – due to an insane and very sudden spike in the number of connections to our central database. A couple of posts had gone semi-viral and a record number of new visitors were pouring in by the minute. Our bandwidth monitor exploded. Overage notifications flooded my inbox. I began to panic as the grim realization that we may have to shut the site down rushed over me. I felt a mixture of pride and nausea as I pored over analytic data – 15,000 unique visitors inside of an hour.

I called our hosting provider, expecting the worst. A man named Ron answered the phone. I told him who I was and why I was calling. Ron’s response floored me.

“You run What The Christ?”

My response – “Uh, yes?”

“Sir, your website is awesome – one of my favorites on our cluster. What can I do for you?”

This was not the reaction that I was expecting.

Fast forward twenty minutes. Ron is now aware of our problem and has a team of three technicians working after hours to migrate us over to a dedicated hosting solution. Meanwhile, I’m scrambling to run database backups and making copies of everything in triplicate. In the midst of this absolute chaos, I realize something.

I love this website… and I’m not ready to walk away.

Sure, database issues are a pain in the ass and it can take ages to source out and queue good content. But there are too many people who visit this site daily and appreciate what we do here for me to just abandon it. I can find the time to keep this place going, damn it.

To get to the point of all of this, I’ve changed my mind about leaving WTC behind.

I ended talks with two prospective buyers this morning. This afternoon, I started talking to Mr. Blue about what we can do to make this site really “go” in 2010. We re-tabled a couple of ideas that we’ve kicked around in the past but never really had the resources to try. Now that we have a new server and a much larger pipe feeding the site, there’s really nothing standing in our way.

Keep your eyes open. Shit is about to pick up around here in a big way.

Server Hiccup

It looks like the server bit the dust for a few hours today. I have no idea what caused the crash. However, I’m implementing measures to force a restart in the future. I’m also wiring a manual restart to my BlackBerry.

5,000

We’ve surpassed the 5,000 post mark with this most recent round of updates.

I think we’ll mark the occasion by knocking down the cost of lifetime VIP access to $15 for the next five days.

As an added bonus, one lucky VIP member will receive a pre-order for Zombieland on either Blu-ray or DVD. (We’ll select the winner randomly and they’ll have their pick of format.)

Server Speed?

I just wanted to pose a quick question: how fast are things loading up for everyone? About the same as they were a week ago? Faster? Please let me know in the comments. I’m in the process of tweaking things and want to be sure that everything is solid on the user end.

Update #1: I’ve identified the source of the problem with VIP members being sent to a white screen after they log in. I’m working on a solution. I should have it fixed soon.

Update #2: I believe that the VIP access issue is now resolved. If you happen to be a VIP member, please give logging in a try and let me know whether you’re successful.

(Almost) Back to Normal

It looks like things are back to normal at last. The main site appears to be running and I just relaunched the VIP section without any major problems. Teh Winnar is still down but I should be able to get that sorted out within the next day or two.

For those of you who are wondering what the hell has been going on around here for the past two days, I have a rather simple explanation. In a nutshell, we experienced a record number of visitors earlier this week – more than 25,000 in the span of an hour – and as a result we burned through our available bandwidth and hardware resources like a box of matches. The site slowed to a crawl and things were heading down an ugly path of overage charges from our host.

I made the executive decision to step in and restructure things. It was that or simply shut the site down, to be honest. We ended up completely replacing the main WTC web server and we quadrupled the size of the main pipe connected to it. That required a lot of coordination with several technicians at our primary host. They stayed outside of normal business hours to help me get several things up and running. I owe them big time.

I apologize for all of the various messages and errors related to the downtime these past few days. We weren’t exactly planning to make any drastic changes to the server structure or the hosting for the site. It’s just one of those things that happens, I suppose.

I continue to have problems with Google Analytics and the tracking on our banner ad delivery. It’s going to be at least a few more days before I get the kinks worked out.

Server Move

You may notice some site performance issues and possibly a brief downtime later today. I’m moving a substantial portion of the site over to a new dedicated server to resolve some longstanding internal administration problems. I apologize for the inconvenience but this unfortunately has to happen today.

WTC, 2010, Mr. Pink, Etc.

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. It seems like 2009 blew right past me. I don’t even want to think about how many hours I spent posting updates, writing endless lines of PHP and CSS, and trying desperately to stay on top of emails. That number is probably in the high hundreds, to be honest.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s been fun. However, running What The Christ? and keeping the rest of my life in order has been a challenge, to say the least. The site’s core audience grew exponentially this year, forcing me to face administration issues that I never thought I would have to deal with when I unleashed this beast on the web 15 months ago. The site was so popular at one point that I almost had to switch service providers for fear of being charged a small fortune in bandwidth overages.

I don’t foresee that slowing down in 2010, either. Page views have doubled in the past two months alone and we have days where more than 15,000 unique visitors hit the site. We’ve been discussing switching to a fully dedicated server solution to handle the load increases.

Yes, 2010 is going to be a huge year for WTC.

…and that’s exactly why I’m going to step down as the owner and administrator sometime in January or February.

No, that’s not a joke. I’m calling it quits. Moving on. Riding into the sunset. The truth is that I never expected this website to last as long as it has and with everything that I have coming down the pipe in my personal life this year (a kid being one of them), I’m just not the right person to be in charge anymore. I started this website as a small, fun side project and it’s simply snowballed into more than I really have time to properly manage.

With that said, I think it’s only fair that I share my plan with you, the people who have made this site as popular as it is today. Rest assured that I’m not closing the site. My aim right now is to sell it to someone who wants to keep WTC alive and continue to foster its growth. There’s a lot of fun to be had and money to be made on a website as popular as this one. I refuse to simply shut the doors and dump all of my hard work. I already have a few leads on potential buyers but if you’re (seriously) interested in discussing purchasing the site, then please feel free to contact me. I’d be happy to share information about income, analytic data, and anything else related to the site that you may want to know as a potential buyer.

That’s about all for right now. You shouldn’t notice anything unusual leading up to my departure. Things may shake up a bit once I’m gone but my guess is that the new owner – whoever that turns out to be – will be just as dedicated to keeping you all coming back daily as I’ve been.

Feel free to tell me how much you love me or hate me in the comments. Ask questions, too. I’m sure that there are at least a few hanging out there.

WTC Porn Shoot: This Weekend?

For those of you who missed this thread last week, we currently have a plan in the works to do an exclusive WTC adult movie and photo shoot with a pair of hot college girls.

I wanted to let you all know that the shoot could potentially happen this weekend. It all depends on how strong response is to the WTC Holiday Extravaganza throughout the remainder of the day today. We almost have enough to fund the entire project, including some new lighting and a couple of fun costumes for the girls to wear (and strip out of). Just a few more dollars should cover it!

Grab those VIP accounts while they’re hot – and cheap. Every VIP member has the opportunity to submit requests for personalized photos, etc.

“Social porn”, I guess you could call it?
