Apple Employee “Loses” iPhone 5 Prototype
CNET is reporting that an unnamed Apple employee lost an iPhone 5 prototype at a bar in San Francisco back in July. Yes, this is a bizarre repeat of the scenario that played out last year with an iPhone 4 prototype. You may remember that particular phone fell into the hands of a Gizmodo editor - a huge scandal. This latest lost iPhone, however, was recovered.
Apple Hires JailbreakMe Developer
Alright, so maybe things are going to change a bit under Tim Cook after all. Only two days after parting ways with Steve Jobs, the powers that be at Apple have extended an offer of employment – at least on an internship basis – to Nicholas Alegra.
Also known as Comex, Alegra is the 19 year old responsible for JailbreakMe.
Tim Cook Says Apple Not Changing
Tim Cook, the new CEO at Apple, wasted no time laying out his vision for the company in an email addressed to all employees yesterday. He doesn’t plan to change the structure or the culture that Steve Jobs worked so hard to establish and cultivate.
In fact, Cook’s exact words were that “Apple is not going to change,” and that it will continue to be “the magical place that it is.” You can read the whole email here.
Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple CEO
Steve Jobs, the man who brought Apple back from the brink more than a decade ago, has resigned as CEO of the company. It’s been widely speculated that the man who gave us iOS and all of its related devices is (sadly) losing his fight with pancreatic cancer.
Tim Cook, who has served as the tech giant’s leader while Jobs has been on medical leave for the past six months, will take over. Jobs will remain attached to the company as Chairman of the board of directors and, hopefully, will continue to assist with innovation.
Apple to Announce 8GB iPhone 4
Multiple sources are reporting – and Reuters is confirming – that Apple has plans to bring an 8GB version of the iPhone 4 to market next month alongside news that the iPhone 5 is on the way. No word yet on price but there’s a chance that it will be priced to compete in the sub-$200 market, which would be awesome.
New Apple Product Coming?
Several Japanese news sites are reporting that Apple is planning to introduce something “absolutely different” from their existing product line – possibly next month.
Are we finally going to see an Apple branded television? Maybe a new touchscreen desktop or laptop of some sort? Could it be an Apple gaming system? Anything is possible.
RAGE HD Free on iTunes Store for One Week
Bethesda and id Software challenged RAGE fans last week to push the game’s Facebook fan page past 100,000 “likes”, promising to make the iOS version of the game absolutely free to download for a week if they reached the milestone.
It took no time at all, of course, and the companies made good on their promise. If you have a compatible device and don’t yet own the game, be sure to grab it before August 25th!
iPad 3 Coming In September?
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, we can expect to see the iPad 3 on the market by September. The newest iteration of the insanely popular Apple tablet will feature a 2048 by 1536 pixel display, which is just a tad better than the 1024 by 768 pixels found in the iPad 2. No word yet on what else the new model will feature, however.
Apple Patents Projector Technology For iOS Devices
9to5Mac reports that Apple just patented Pico projector technology – and they’re planning to integrate it into future iOS devices. The Pico tech could be used both as a means by which to project video and as a way to detect motion. That could make Kinect style controls possible with future iOS devices including the iPad and MacBook Pro, among other lines.
Does this mean that the iPhone 5 will have an integrated video projector? It’s too soon to tell at this point – but it’s possible!
Gizmodo Cleared In iPhone Prototype Theft Case
Former Gizmodo editor Jason Chen will not face criminal charges for his role in the site’s acquisition of a stolen (and at the time unannounced) iPhone 4 prototype last year.
“After a consideration of all of the evidence, it was determined that no charges would be filed against employees of Gizmodo,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steven Wagstaffe announced in a press release.
Brian Hogan – the man who found the phone in a bar after an Apple engineer left it behind – will face one count of misappropriation of lost property. It’s a misdemeanor and isn’t likely to carry a jail sentence, however, so he’s more or less in the clear.
