Apple + ASUS = Tablet

There are rumors flying all over the place right now that Apple is working with ASUS to bring a 10″ multi-touch tablet PC to market by Christmas. Depending on who you listen to, the unit will sell for anywhere from $500 to $900, will come in two flavors (one including a web cam) and may even be capable of interfacing with a Mac desktop or laptop to be used as a control surface.

Oh, and by the way… it’s supposedly going to have an OLED screen.

I’m mostly just interested in what it can do for Ableton users.

Microsoft Stores: Coming In Fall

CNET is reporting that Microsoft has big plans to open retail stores this fall to compete directly with Apple’s own brick and mortar shops.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out. Given the huge success of the Xbox 360, I think it would be wise for them to dedicate a large part of the shops to gamers.

Apple Requests That Microsoft Pull “Laptop Hunters”

According to CNET, Microsoft‘s Kevin Turner recently told the Worldwide Partner Conference about a phone call he received from Apple‘s legal departmnt regarding the “Laptop Hunters” ads Microsoft has recently made to combat the anti-Windows commercials Apple has been putting out. He states:

And you know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, “Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.” They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business. (Applause.)

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, “Is this a joke? Who are you?” Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we’re just going to keep running them and running them and running them.

This is hilarious. Apparently, Apple isn’t too happy about Microsoft making commercials criticizing their products. Wait, what? Readers should remember the biggest and most popular Apple ads were those criticizing Windows and Microsoft.

Fun with Networking, Part 1: Media Center

Nowadays, nearly everyone has multiple computers. A home network used to be relatively rare but times are quickly changing and with it so are the uses for these networks. The biggest chunk of requests I get from people is setting up their media library to be accessible outside of their main computer.

Windows Media Center changed a lot of things when it was first released not as an OS but as a program for Windows XP back in 2003. If your Windows computer has Media Center installed you can share media back and forth with an Xbox 360, which has a lot of the same functionality. There are also several alternatives such as MythTV, MediaPortal, and XBMC. If your media library is heavily iTunes-centric, Apple’s FrontRow & AppleTV give you some options for the Mac side as well. (Note: AppleTV works fine with Windows. It’s mainly an extension to iTunes). CyberNet did a nice article last year comparing Front Row and Media Center.

Choosing the right media center program or device can affect the next steps. Check back for Part 2 of this three part feature, where we’ll figure out how best to store media. Part 3 will cover the sharing of media across the network.

Ipod Boobies

Apple could make even more of a fortune than they already have on the iPod if they turned this photo into an ad.

Steve Jobs Had a Liver Transplant Two Months Ago

Check out this report from the Associated Press. It claims that Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs had a liver transplant in Tennessee two months ago. Apple refuses to comment, stating simply that Jobs is looking forward to returning to work at the end of this month. That pretty much confirms it.

Safari 4

In case you didn’t know, Safari 4 came out of beta about a week ago. If you’ve never tried Apple’s browser before, then now is definitely the right time to take it for a spin. It’s much faster than Firefox or Opera, more stable, and the interface is cleaner and sharper than any other browser I’ve ever used.

I watched Mr. Maroon ripping through Google Maps the other night trying to make the thing freeze and it kept right up with him regardless of how fast he zoomed or panned.
