Google Releases Chrome For Android Beta

After several years in development, Google finally released a beta version of their popular Chrome browser for Android devices. There are still a lot of features missing – like support for Flash and extensions – but it’s not half bad overall and will only get better over time.

Unauthorized Android App Store Coming Soon

Koushik Dutta, a member of the team that brought us CyanogenMod and the creator of ClockworkMod, just announced that he is in the process of creating an app store that will be home to apps that have been banned from Google’s official Android Market.

The new store will include customs ROMs, retro gaming emulators pulled due to copyright complaints, unofficial tethering apps, Visual Voicemail apps, one-click rooting apps, and all of the other goodies that Google says they can’t feature in their store.

Google Blacks Out Logo to Raise SOPA Awareness

It’s not quite the full “blackout” that other big websites are committing to but Google is at least throwing its weight behind the anti-SOPA movement with a special logo today.

Gaming Titans Withdraw SOPA Support

Three of the biggest brands in the gaming industry have officially withdrawn their support for Lamar Smith’s extremely controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill.

Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Sony Electronics are no longer listed as supporters of the bill as of this morning. Weeks of intense pressure from gamers, threats of retaliation from the Anonymous hacktivist collective, and the mass exodus from GoDaddy in response to their initial support have obviously made it clear to corporations that SOPA will not be tolerated.

Microsoft also dropped their support this week – and there are rumors floating that Google and Facebook have both held internal discussions about the “nuclear option” of completely shutting down operations if the bill passes in its current form.

In other words: goodbye, SOPA.

Google Tablet Coming Within Six Months

Google CEO Eric Schmidt dropped big news during a talk with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera: we can expect a Google tablet “of the highest quality” within the next six months.

No other details are available at this time, although there are rumors that it might be branded as the Nexus tablet. Given the trainwreck that was the Nexus One, I’m hoping not.

Google Lets It Snow

Google just added a neat Easter Christmas Egg to their search results. If you search for the words “let it snow”, you get a flurry of HTML5 driven snowflakes with your results.

It’s completely useless but also kind of neat.

Android Market Super Sale: Day 10

Today is the tenth and final day of the $0.10 sale on the Android Market.

There are lots of good games to be had for the finale including Shine Runner, Hyper Jump, and a second chance to grab Sentinel 3: Homeworld – one of if not the best tower defense game on the Android platform. (I’ve spent a lot of time playing it.)
