Google Blog Search

Ever been looking for a blog post that you read a year ago but just can’t seem to find through a normal Google search? It happens to me all the time. I was complaining to a coworker about it the other day and he pointed me in the direction of Google’s Blog Search tool. I’d never heard of it before but I was able to find the post that I was looking for – and more! It’s an amazing resource.

Measurement Lab

Curious about whether you’re getting screwed out of bandwidth by your ISP? You should check out the New America Foundation’s new suite of tools, dubbed Measurement Lab, or M-Lab for short. They’re designed to give you the raw details on your connection speed, limits, etc. I’m testing my own connection this evening.

As a sidenote, these NAF guys are supported by Google. The search giant actually approached them and asked them to develop these tools in the first place. Very cool of Google to support such a project.

ClipBlast

I just found ClipBlast the other day. It’s a generalized video search site that appears to crawl other sites for its results. I definitely like the design. It’s fast, easy to use, and it aggregates data in a meaningful way.

In other words, it’s kind of like Google for video. I was able to track down quite a few things that I’ve been looking for over the past few months.

PWN YouTube

I don’t know how long this website will stay online before Google somehow manages to get it taken down but PWN YouTube is, for the time being, an excellent way to download YouTube videos to your computer. I’ve already tested it on a couple of videos. It works great for me.

Why Google Employees Quit

TechCrunch got their hands on authentic looking emails from former Google employees who were posed with a question by Google’s human resources department last year. The question was, “Why did you quit Google?”

Some of the answers are rough. Take a look for yourself here.

YouTube Launches TV-Friendly Version

Google has just announced that they’re launching a TV-friendly version of YouTube to work better with the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 web browsers. I haven’t had a chance to test it out on my Wii, yet, but I’m told by a couple of friends that it works great. You can visit the new optimized version of the site at http://www.youtube.com/tv on your console’s browser.

Del.icio.us Founder Joins Google

Joshua Schachter, the guy who founded Del.icio.us, has taken a new job with Google according to this Silicon Alley Insider post. Schachter parted ways with Yahoo, which purchased Del.icio.us from him about two and a half years ago, last June due to a disagreement with management.

He never should’ve sold his baby to Yahoo. Now, it’ll go down with the ship.

Leather Keyboard

Found this one over on Gizmodo. It’s a leather keyboard made by a company called Gokokuwa. You can get one with blank keys for $548 or buy one with letters and numbers etched in for $603.

You can buy it directly here. (The site is translated via Google.)

Yahoo Ups the Ante on Online Privacy

Yahoo has announced that they are changing their policy on search records. They plan to start anonymizing search records after 90 days by removing the associated IP address for each search. This puts them way ahead of both Google and Microsoft, both of which are currently on an 18 month cycle.

If you really dig into things, it’s kind of scary how much data the search giants are keeping on everyone. There’s a really good article covering this story and its ramifications on Wired.

Google Chrome: No More Beta

According to the official blog for Google Chrome, the web’s newest browser is no longer in beta. This is an unusual move for Google, which has kept some of its other big services (such as GMail) in beta status for several years.

Regardless, this is exciting news. I wasn’t a huge fan of Chrome when the first candidate was released but over the past few months the software has improved by leaps and bounds. There’s still a lot of work to be done but I think that this could very well become a strong competitor for Mozilla Firefox within the next few years.
