Windows 8: Coming 2012?

Microsoft supposedly claimed on its Dutch news site – of all places – that Windows 8 is “about two years away” from market. That means that we should see it sometime in 2012.

I’m still not used to all of the changes from XP to 7 and they’re already talking about their next operating system? God damn it.

Microsoft to Buy Adobe?

Rumors are flying in the wake of last week’s “secret” meeting between the heads of Adobe and Microsoft. The general consensus seems to be that Microsoft is considering acquiring the graphics giant in a bid to give Apple more competition on the multimedia front.

Of course, it’s all just speculation at this point. The likelihood of an acquisition of this size is small, especially given the legal shit storm that it would cause.

When asked about the possible deal last Friday, Steve Ballmer said, “No comment. If you are going to do something, you say nothing. So, I will be entirely consistent with standard CEO operating procedure.”

Adobe and Microsoft to Form Unholy Alliance?

The New York Times is running a report that a closed door meeting recently occurred between Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen.

This undoubtedly has something to do with recent chumminess between Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt, the men in charge of Apple and Google.

Lawsuits in the Mobile Business

It’s almost impossible to keep track of who’s suing who (and for what) in the world of wireless communications today. It seems like every major player is pointing the finger at someone for patent or copyright infringement.

The infographic below illustrates just how tangled the legal web has become.

Gears of War 3 Pushed Back to Q4 2011

Microsoft and Epic Games announced today that the release of Gears of War 3 has been pushed back to Q4 2011. No specific reason was given aside from making it “the marquee title for the holiday season”.

In other words, it’s taking them longer than anticipated to get shit done. Oh, well. At least they’re planning four player co-op and the opportunity to play as the Locust this time.

British Company Battles Microsoft Over Xbox 360 Controller

Back in April, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against a British peripheral manufacturer called Datel for selling an unauthorized Xbox 360 controller called the TurboFire2.

The game pad, which closely resembles official Xbox 360 controllers, connects to your console without a dongle. It can also be connected to your PC to download custom button maps and settings – including things like rate of fire, recoil, and even macros.

Considering that they’re cheaper than the official Microsoft controllers and they give you a serious (and extremely unfair) advantage on Xbox Live, I can see why Microsoft is angry.

Assassin’s Creed II Now Available Via Games On Demand

Microsoft just added Assassin’s Creed II to its list of titles available through the Games on Demand service on Xbox Live. It’s priced at $40, which is about par with what you can expect to pay for a brand new copy of the game in-store.

You can, of course, find a hard copy on the used games market for cheaper.

  • 5,901 years have been spent in online games
  • 20 million daily challenges have been completed

  • 165 billion credits have been earned

That’s… disgusting. Is the entire world playing the damn game?

Project Milo Canceled

Project Milo, the amazing tech demo used to introduce the Kinect interface to the world at E3 2009, has been canceled according to a source close to the project.

More than a dozen contractors who were working on the game have been let go but the engine that they developed will supposedly be repurposed into another Kinect enabled game based on the Fable franchise.

Lionhead Studios refuses to comment on the rumor.

Halo: Not Dead By a Longshot

According to Microsoft Game Studios corporate Vice President Phil Spencer, we’re in for a lot more from the Halo franchise. The series is now in the hands of 343 Industries, a development firm built by Microsoft exclusively to handle the property.

Here’s a direct quote from Spencer in a recent interview with IGN:

“There’s no explicit strategy that says we’re to ship a Halo game every year. I will say I think one Halo game every three years — which was kind of our old cadence – is probably not frequent enough.”

You can read the rest of the interview here.
