Wii U Twice the Power of Xbox 360

Hot on the heels of a rumor that the Xbox 720 should be seven times the power of the Xbox 360, a source told Develop recently that the Wii U is only twice the power of the current-gen Microsoft console. That’s a lot less than what some studios expected from Nintendo.

But then again, this is Nintendo we’re talking about. They’re always behind the curve.

Nintendo to Roll Out Actual Online Gaming Network

At a corporate investor meeting yesterday, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a bit of a surprise announcement: the company is working on a true online gaming network for their Nintendo 3DS and forthcoming Wii U systems to compete directly with Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. The new system will facilitate gaming and digital downloads.

All I can say about this is, “It’s about god damn time.”

ESA Continues to Support SOPA Despite Member Opposition

Despite the fact that three of the group’s largest and most influential members withdrew their support of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) last week, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) continues to support the potentially Internet-breaking new bill.

Here’s an excerpt from their official statement on the matter:

We are mindful of concerns raised about a negative impact on innovation.

It ought to be very interesting to see how member companies – especially those that yanked their support of SOPA – choose to respond to this one.

Gaming Titans Withdraw SOPA Support

Three of the biggest brands in the gaming industry have officially withdrawn their support for Lamar Smith’s extremely controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill.

Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Sony Electronics are no longer listed as supporters of the bill as of this morning. Weeks of intense pressure from gamers, threats of retaliation from the Anonymous hacktivist collective, and the mass exodus from GoDaddy in response to their initial support have obviously made it clear to corporations that SOPA will not be tolerated.

Microsoft also dropped their support this week – and there are rumors floating that Google and Facebook have both held internal discussions about the “nuclear option” of completely shutting down operations if the bill passes in its current form.

In other words: goodbye, SOPA.

Myst Coming to Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo is bringing Myst - one of the most iconic games of all time – to the 3DS.

(If you don’t remember Myst, you’re too young to be looking at boobies on WTC, mmkay?)

The port is a complete 3D remake featuring a handful of new landscapes and an age called RIME that wasn’t part of the original PC game.

You can expect to see it in stores this coming March for around $29.99.

Nintendo Jumping On the DLC Bandwagon

Nintendo is sadly breaking down and jumping on the DLC bandwagon next year.

According to a report published by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, the company will release a paid expansion for Fire Emblem on the 3DS sometime in March, 2012. If the download fares well in the market, we can expect to see 3DS and Wii U DLC to become the norm.

And with that, DLC has finally conquered the last bastion of gaming. Fuck.

Deadmau5 Was Trolling, Didn’t Lose PS Vita

World famous DJ and electro house producer Deadmau5 tweeted about having lost his PS Vita yesterday. Today, he revealed that he was just trolling. He claims that he just “wanted to see how much management would freak out”. Translation: Deadmau5 is an asshole.

Oh, and he also got Shigeru Miyamoto’s autograph tattooed on his arm. What a tool.

Skyrim Wins Game of the Year, Zelda Enters Hall of Fame

Not that it’s a big surprise but the Bethesda team took home the honor of “Game of the Year” for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at the 2011 VGA on Spike TV tonight.

In other VGA RPG related news, Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at one point to accept an award inducting The Legend of Zelda into the hall of fame.

Joystiq has a full rundown of this year’s winners.

Nintendo Denies Rumors About Shigeru Miyamoto

Wired made huge waves yesterday after Game|Life published a piece about a discussion they had with video game design legend Shigeru Miyamoto – the father of both the Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda franchises. Game|Life claimed that Miyamoto said he was “stepping down” from his role at Nintendo.

Nintendo, however, says that there’s nothing to worry about and that Miyamoto isn’t leaving. Oops. Sounds like someone rather badly misinterpreted part of the interview.

Nintendo Wii U Specs Revealed?

An anonymous Japanese developer claiming to be close to the project leaked the Nintendo Wii U specs to several gaming blogs a few days back. Here’s what they say the box contains:

  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
  • 768 MB of DRAM “embedded” with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU

The CPU is definitely impressive. The amount of RAM, however, is a bit of a disappointment.
