Vanquish Demo Coming September 2nd
Vanquish, the new futuristic shooter from SEGA and Platinum Games, gets the demo treatment on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 2nd. The demo features a prologue sequence that concludes with some sort of boss fight.
The full game, which director Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame) says is already finished and ready to play, releases on October 19.
Here’s the synopsis from the game’s official site, in case you haven’t been following this one:
Russia and the United States are vying for ownership of the world’s fast-depleting energy resources and the US has constructed a space station in order to harness energy from the sun. Russian forces capture this space station and divert its harvested solar energy into a blast wave that destroys San Francisco, aiming to force the US into a total and unconditional surrender. In response, the US tasks its armed forces with recapturing the space station before the Russians can annihilate their next target – New York.
I’m stoked about this one. I posted one of the trailers a while back. It looks like it’s going to push new boundaries, graphics-wise.

Burn Zombie Burn PC Review
I spent some quality time with the PC port of Burn Zombie Burn, the cartoon style top-down shooter from doublesix. It was originally a PSN game but is now available through Steam. (It’s actually on sale right now.)
In all honesty, I bought this one on an impulse. IGN gave the PS3 version high marks and I thought it looked decent. I’ve logged about four hours with it so far and I’m having a lot of fun – more than I expected, to be honest. If I had to describe the gameplay in one word, I’d use “frantic”. You really never stop moving in this game. It isn’t easy, even at the “normal” setting. You really have to plan your moves carefully because zombies close in on you fast.
My only real complaint about BZB at this point is that it definitely feels like a port. I played my first few games with a mouse and keyboard but quickly switched to my Xbox 360 pad. It’s not as easy as it should be to aim and switch weapons in either case but you can change the controls to just about anything you want via the settings. I was also disappointed to see that there’s absolutely no multiplayer component to speak of. Considering how much fun it was to play through Zombie Apocalypse on the 360 with friends, I’m surprised that the developer didn’t take the time to include co-op functionality.
Regardless, Burn Zombie Burn is well worth the $10 asking price. There are several levels and modes, tons of unlocks, and a wide range of weapons, upgrades, and easter eggs along the way. (I won’t spoil the surprises – there are some great pop culture references.)
Check out the trailer below.

id Software Announces Rage Release Date
id Software confirmed at QuakeCon that Rage, the first game to use their new id Tech 5 engine, will release around the middle of September, 2011.
Jon Carmack, the company’s CTO, gave a mind-blowing presentation of the new tech driving the iPhone 4 version of the game during his keynote speech at this year’s convention. The game will also see release on PC, Xbox 360, and the PS3.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition to Include a Working RC Car Mounted with Color Video Camera
Activision is taking the concept of a collector’s edition to new heights with the Prestige Edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Included with the package will be an RC car like the one seen in the game’s multiplayer footage. The car, which features a color camera capable of recording video and sound, has a range of up to 200 feet.
There’s no pricing information available right now but you can bet that this is going to be one of the most expensive limited editions of a video game ever created.

Monday Night Combat
Monday Night Combat, one of the highly anticipated new Summer of Arcade releases on Xbox Live Arcade, is now available.
Check out the launch trailer below. It’s received a lot of praise so far.
Alien Swarm
Tomorrow, Valve is releasing Alien Swarm, a top-down co-op alien shooter originally developed as an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, absolutely free on Steam. They’re also releasing the Source SDK for the game, essentially making the source from the project free for other game developers and modders to use as an example to work from.
Why? Because they’re Valve, that’s why. And judging from this trailer, this is going to be an awesome game. We’re going to have to play this at the next WTC Game Night.

Nexuiz
A relatively unknown game developer called IIIFonic has announced plans to bring a multiplayer shooter called Nexuiz to PSN and XBLA next year. While that in itself isn’t big news, what is big news is that they’re going to be the first company to put out a digital download title based on Crytek’s CryENGINE 3.
There aren’t many other details about the game available right now. IIIFonic has plans for a big press event at PAX Prime in Seattle this September, however.

Massive Counter-Strike: Source Update
Valve dished out an absolutely massive update to Counter-Strike: Source today. The changes were tested in a closed, private beta for a few months before being rolled out to the general public on Steam.
It’s awesome to see that such a beloved PC shooter is still receiving updates even though it’s more than a decade old. Valve scores big points in my book for continuing to support the games that made them such a major name in the PC gaming business.
You can check out some of the highlights at the game’s official purchase page.
Alien Breed: Impact
Alien Breed: Impact, the latest top-down shooter from legendary developer Team 17, landed on Steam last week. I had a chance to sit down with it for a few hours today. I’m sad to report that it was a completely underwhelming experience.
In fact, I want my money back. This game sucks.
For starters, there’s a general lack of polish across the board. From the chunky, ugly menus to the funky camera angles to the poor game controls, there isn’t a single thing about my initial experience with the game that makes me want to go back and play again.
I felt like I was playing a “bargain bin” title from 2001 the entire time because of horrible design decisions. For example, you have to press the space bar to pick up items even when you’re standing right on top of them. Why the hell should I have to press a button? Why can’t my character just pick up the item automatically? That’s how it works in every other decent shooter ever made. I can’t count how many times I was in the middle of a firefight, strafing away from a group of enemies toward an ammo cache, only to overshoot it because I forgot that I had to stop and hit the fucking spacebar.
Don’t even get me started on the piss poor targeting system.
I could probably write more about my horrible, horrible experience but I think I’d rather just go play something that’s actually worth my time and money.
Whatever you do, don’t waste your hard earned cash on this piece of junk.
Forgotten Retro Classics: Jet Force Gemini (N64)
Jet Force Gemini, known as Star Twins in Japan (to make it easier for people to pronounce), slipped under the radar with a lot of gamers. It was one of the legendary RareWare’s many over-the-top shooters released for the Nintendo 64 in the late 90′s.
Set in a distant galaxy engulfed by war, Jet Force Gemini tells the story of Juno, his sister Vela, and their dog Lupus. The three are the last of the Jet Force fleet – a galactic army that has been fighting an evil insect called Mizar, whose ruthless army of bugs is bent on conquering the galaxy and destroying the last remaining Jet Force unit.
The game features a lengthy single player campaign, two player co-op and several multiplayer modes. It’s a mix of platformer, shooter, and “run and gun”. Jet Force Gemini was well received by critics but was ultimately overshadowed by Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark – RareWare’s other big titles.
If you ever get the chance to play this incredible game, you owe it to yourself to give it a go. It’s a rare (pardon the pun) gaming experience that you really shouldn’t miss.
