Just Cause 2 – First Impressions
It’s been a few days since the launch of Just Cause 2 but I unfortunately didn’t have any time to sit down and play it for the first time until last night.
Right out of the gate, the thing that stands out to me about this game is the sheer vastness of the environment. You really feel like a small, relatively insignificant part of a massive world. The graphics are beautiful and the game engine has a lot of polish. I’ve got it running at full blast on my 285GTX supported by a Phenom X4 955 and 8GB of DDR3 – no hiccups whatsoever.
Although the plot is paper thin, the dialogue is sharp and the gameplay makes up for the lack of story. It feels like a mash-up of Red Faction Guerrilla and Grand Theft Auto IV. You’re shooting baddies and blowing up buildings within the first five minutes of the campaign, which is incredibly long. Mr. Maroon reported a few nights ago that he was 7% complete and had already logged more than eight hours playing.
My only complaint at this point is that the enemy AI is a bit goofy at times and there seem to be some clipping issues with a few of the vehicles. However, that doesn’t take too much away from the game. On the whole, it’s a lot of fun and definitely worth buying.
F.3.A.R.
An unnamed Spanish gaming magazine apparently has the world exclusive on F.3.A.R., the third proper entry in the martial arts enhanced horror shooter created by Monolith Productions.
The first F.E.A.R. was a critically acclaimed success but the series has since been plagued with poorly made “expansions” and a rather lame sequel that barely made a blip on the gaming radar – even with the support a rather large marketing campaign.
The executives at Warner Brothers, the series’ publisher, refuse to confirm (or deny) anything at this time but the poor quality scan seen at left looks legitimate to me. Details are expected soon.
Crackdown 2
I wasn’t a huge fan of the first Crackdown but the sequel is looking rather awesome.
Gears of War III: April, 2011?
There are rumors flying around the web today that the third entry in the record breaking Gears of War series will arrive in April, 2011. The only problem is that Epic Games hasn’t yet confirmed that the game even exists.
Brink: Cinematic Trailer
Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ. Bethesda, you have my undivided attention.
Red Faction: Guerrilla II Coming In March, 2011
Joystiq got a few minutes with THQ’s executive VP of Core Games Danny Bilson. Here’s what he had to say about the game.
“The new game takes [Red Faction] to a whole new place, it kind of goes back to the old Red Faction because about 80% of it is underground,” Bilson said. According to Bilson, the as-yet-properly-named sequel — which he describes as a “hybrid” between the first two titles in the Red Faction franchise and Guerrilla — is planned for release in March 2011.
Sounds promising! I like the fact that they’re returning to the story’s roots. I loved the first Guerrilla title but missed the tunnels and underground combat found in the original game.
Lost Planet 2
I must admit that I never played through the first Lost Planet game. However, this extended trailer promoting the upcoming sequel has me wondering whether I should pick up a copy of the first game in anticipation of the second chapter.
Round 6
I’m going to let the developer’s blurb speak for itself.
Round 6 is a short 3D animated film created by Snowball Studios.
Our goal was to make a high quality video game cinematic styled trailer. In order to do this, we invented a video game called Fragball on which we based the action. The film shows an excerpt from the personal story of Snap, a Fragball gamer, as he plays out his last round – round 6.
You can check out the (very cool) official website for more details.
Bodycount
Remember a few weeks back when I posted about the secret game that Stuart Black, the main developer behind the Xbox shooter BLACK from Criterion Games, was working on with the people at Codemasters? Well, that game now has a title: Bodycount. Not much is known about the game at this point other than the fact that it’s completely over the top. It was featured on the cover of this month’s copy of Xbox 360 Magazine.
