The Internet In 2011 By the Numbers
Just like they did in 2010, Pingdom put together a rundown of global Internet activity over the course of the year 2011. The report is just as mind-blowing as it was last year.
Perhaps the most staggering bit of information is the fact that more than 300 million new websites popped up last year compared to “just” 21.4 million in 2012.
Google Randomly Deleting Google+ Accounts?
Google+ appears to be having some rather serious complications this weekend because of their community standards policy regarding real names. ZDNet has the details but the gist of things is that Google has been deleting accounts en masse with no clear reason as to why.
Google+
Having bombed completely stumbled their way through the launches and ultimate failures known as Buzz and Wave, Google is hoping to finally break into the world of social media and networking with a completely new concept called Google+. It’s hard to explain what it is and what it does in just a few sentences. Fortunately, TechCrunch has a full write-up.

Italian Police Investigating Virtual Burglary
In what has to be one of the most bizarre criminal investigations of the year, Italian police are investigating a virtual burglary that supposedly occurred in a popular Facebook game called Pet Society. The victim, Paola Letizia of Palermo, says that she paid $139 for a collection of virtual furniture, clothes and paintings that were recently stolen by a hacker.
“I don’t think it matters that the flat only exists in Facebook,” Letizia told the Italian media. “It is real to me and I have suffered a real loss.”
Italian authorities are investigating the crime as an “aggravated entry” into the victim’s e-mail and Facebook account. The punishment could be up to five years in prison.
This is so ridiculous, I don’t even know where to begin.

Digg Finally Collapses
If there was any question as to whether Digg would survive the botched V4 launch a few weeks back, we now have an answer. The company is firing 37% of its employees in a last ditch effort to stay alive. It’s not looking good, however, as the once mighty social content aggregator shrinks from 67 to 42 people.
CEO Matt Williams says that they’ll be “refocusing” the site and he intends to make an announcement regarding changes later today. Unfortunately, nothing he does at this point will make a difference. Digg is dead. Long live Reddit.
Bonus: A member of the Digg community caught the site spamming itself in a bid to get back on track with some of the larger news sites on the web by artificially inflating hits.

Canadian Facebook Spammer Slapped with $1 Billion in Fines
The Quebec Superior Court today upheld a 2008 court decision made in California to fine Facebook spammer Adam Guerbuez more than $1 billion (CDN).
Guerbuez, who is from Montreal, posted ads on 4,366,386 walls for penis enlargement pills and marijuana paraphernalia. He was fined $200 per message.
Obviously, Guerbuez won’t be able to pay up. He filed for bankruptcy protection back in August. He doesn’t feel remorse for his actions, either. In fact, he’s proud of himself. He was quoted as saying, “People know what I’m capable of doing: large-scale marketing.” He also claims that he’s been offered a book and movie deal.

Former Amazon Exec Becomes Digg CEO
Digg announced yesterday that Amazon executive Matt Williams is taking over as the new CEO of the ailing social news site. The company has recently come under fire for its v4 release, which has utterly failed to resolve the ongoing problems of spam and manipulation by a small group of “power users”.
I’d wager that a year from now, Digg will be nothing more than a shell of its former self. It’s a sad situation, really, considering how great the site used to be. Unfortunately, they seem to have developed a bad case of Yahoo! syndrome – they’re suffering from arrogant, inept leadership and a user base that isn’t mature enough to sustain itself. The worst part is that nothing Williams does as the new top dog is going to change that.

Battle of the Cheetos
If you thought the Old Spice social media campaign was awesome, then you’re going to be floored by Battle of the Cheetos. I just spent more than an hour fighting my way up to level ten without even realizing how much time had passed. I must have played twenty matches.

What the F**k is Social Media NOW?
I found this presentation on social media, created by a marketing agency called Espresso, by random chance earlier today. It’s called What the F**k is Social Media NOW? and it’s one of the more interesting presentations that I’ve run across in recent years. Definitely worth a look if for no other reason than to gain a broader understanding of how deep the impact of social media has really been on the world.

Diaspora: One Month In
Remember that group of NYU grads who vowed to combat Facebook with a new, distributed, decentralized social networking platform called Diaspora? Well, they’ve already got three weeks of development behind them – and they’re already well on their way to a functional prototype. You can check out their progress preview over at the official blog.
