Engineer Hacks Wood to Play Music

The Years project by engineer Bartholomaus Traubeck uses an Arduino powered device to translate the rings of a cross-section taken from a tree into electronic sounds. It’s one of the coolest musical “hacks” I’ve seen in a very long time.

Cinematographer Philip Bloom, commissioned by the crown prince of Dubai, created this epic time lapse video. He calls it Abraj, the Arabic plural for “tower”.

The name refers to the iconic Burj Al Arab and the enormous Burj Khalifa.
