Halo: Reach – First Impressions

Halo: Reach had the single most successful launch day of any Microsoft game in history this week, generating an easy $200 million in sales. That’s more money than any movie has ever made on launch day. In fact, that’s more than just about anything has made at launch.

It’s safe to say at this point that the folks at Bungie were successful in their bid to go out with a huge bang. But the big question is whether the sixth and final installment in the series lives up to the immense hype that surrounded it over the past year or so.

As someone who has never been a big fan of the Halo franchise, even I have to admit that the answer to that question is, “Yes.” I say this after having spent more than four hours across dozens of multiplayer matches ranging from Slayer to Firefight – more time than I think I’ve ever spent playing Halo in a single sitting.

From the new interface to the progression system to the game-changing addition of armor upgrades, everything about Reach is polished to a high shine. It’s clear that Bungie let it all hang out this time around, taking suggestions from the community and bringing back most if not all of the things that people loved about previous entries in the franchise. I can’t think of a single thing that’s missing from or wrong with this game. And again, I’ve never been a fan of the franchise.

I’ll leave you with that, if only because I want to get back to playing.

Steel Batallion and Fire Pro Wrestling Return!

Microsoft announced a slew of new games designed for the Kinect platform at the Tokyo Game Show today. Two of the titles named were Steel Batallion: Heavy Armor and Fire Pro Wrestling, surprising entries in franchises deserving of a reboot.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam is DLC, No Retail Version

In a move that’s sure to reignite the debate over DLC versus retail copies of games, EA has announced that the first Battlefield: Bad Company 2 expansion will be a DLC-only release. It’s due for release this winter.

I personally don’t see the problem with digital distribution. In fact, I buy digital whenever possible both on my PC and consoles. I was actually disappointed to see that Microsoft didn’t jump on the bandwagon with Halo: Reach. Call me lazy but I don’t want to drive to the store any more often than I absolutely need to.

This could actually make a great Debate of the Week topic, which we haven’t had in a while. What are your thoughts on digital distribution? Share them in the comments!

Halo: Reach has Landed

Halo: Reach, the final installment in one of the most successful franchises in video game history, has arrived. As promised, I picked up four copies of the game this evening (one for myself, of course) and we picked three VIP members at random using a basic SQL string.

The three winners have already been contacted. Hope to see you all on XBL this weekend!

Halo: Reach Garnering Rave Reviews

It sounds like Halo: Reach is everything that fans were hoping for out of the final offering from Bungie. Early reviews from Destructoid, IGN, and Kotaku call the game a masterpiece in its own right. Most, if not all, of the complaints that gamers have had about previous installments in the series have been addressed.

I had a brief opportunity to play through a bit of the multiplayer beta a few months back. I didn’t post my thoughts at the time because I only played a handful of matches. However, I look forward to seeing what people do with Forge World and reports that there are ways to tune the gameplay in such a way that it mimics the first game are encouraging.

ilomilo

If you like puzzle games, then ilomilo should be right up your alley. It was on display at the Microsoft booth at PAX 2010 last weekend. It’s being developed for XBLA.

The premise is simple: get the two cube people to meet. The trailer should give you some idea of the obstacles you face along the way.

Halo: Reach – Deliver Hope

This is the extended cut of the Halo: Reach “Deliver Hope” trailer. You can say what you want about the series and its developers. There’s no denying that their advertisements are awesome. A full length movie needs to happen.

Duke Nukem Forever: Confirmed for 2011 Release

2K Games dropped the bomb today at PAX. After more than a decade of development, a team at Gearbox Software is bringing Duke Nukem back from the dead.

I repeat: Duke Nukem Forever will see a commercial release in 2011. Gearbox plans to ship the game on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 within the next year.

Kotaku has their first impressions of the playable demo that’s on display this weekend at the convention. They also have a bunch of screenshots.

There are several grainy “over the shoulder” gameplay videos up on YouTube right now. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any clear footage released just yet.

DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue Announced

In what may be one of the fastest jumps to a sequel in gaming history, Hothead Games announced today that DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is finished and due out on XBLA and PSN next month. It was apparently being developed concurrently with the first game, which was released last month.

The new adventure picks up where the first one leaves you hanging. Hothead says that the campaign is 50% longer this time around. Producer Hamish Millar also says that, “There will be more adventure and puzzle questing in this game, but the hack and slash remains.”

Kotaku has the full details.

Vanquish Demo Coming September 2nd

Vanquish, the new futuristic shooter from SEGA and Platinum Games, gets the demo treatment on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 2nd. The demo features a prologue sequence that concludes with some sort of boss fight.

The full game, which director Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame) says is already finished and ready to play, releases on October 19.

Here’s the synopsis from the game’s official site, in case you haven’t been following this one:

Russia and the United States are vying for ownership of the world’s fast-depleting energy resources and the US has constructed a space station in order to harness energy from the sun. Russian forces capture this space station and divert its harvested solar energy into a blast wave that destroys San Francisco, aiming to force the US into a total and unconditional surrender. In response, the US tasks its armed forces with recapturing the space station before the Russians can annihilate their next target – New York.

I’m stoked about this one. I posted one of the trailers a while back. It looks like it’s going to push new boundaries, graphics-wise.
